Get pushed challenge - high and low key

My challenge this week was to " do a diptych on one item of your choice with one picture high key and one low key."

Oh dear, I had a shocking time with this I don't mind saying....... I don't have any off the camera flashes or light boxes to do this challenge properly, so I had to improvise. As far as the low key picture was concerned, I tried taking the picture with a light from another room shining into a dark room and it just didn't work. I tried using a lamp shining down onto the rose from high and low... I tried several different angles and positions, but just couldn't get the right effect. In the end I used a small headlight that is LED powered and wore the headlight whilst taking the picture. I am not very happy with the end result. I do not think there is enough light and shade in the picture, plus the light that there is, is too golden.

The high key picture was even more difficult to try and get. I read up about high key on the internet and asked for help on one of the photography facebook groups. I got several suggestions, but as the natural light this week has just been awful, nothing that was suggested worked and all the pics I took turned out overexposed. In the end I got so fed up with it that I took a picture of the rose against a plain background and altered the background colour in photoshop. The end result is just horrible in my opinion.... I am not skilled at editing and lack the know-how to do this properly. I could ask for more advice on how to do it better, but I am just spent on this particular challenge I am afraid to say.

I made this collage using http://www.picture2life.com/collage/
Here we go Lisa, @homeschoolmom as I mentioned before I had a really hard time with this. :(

Hi Stephanie, great photographs. I'm your Get Pushed partner for this week. Because like me you are shooting in manual mode I challenge you to take a still life with low lighting indoors. Good luck and I look forward to your challenge.

Hi Michelle @psychegrrrl please can you explain what you mean by low lighting? Last weeks challenge was low key and it has been really hard for me to complete the challenge. I don't understand what the difference is between low key and low lighting? Thanks.

Thank you, @sdutoit @photographycrazy for your kind comments.

@stephanies I guess what I mean by low lighting is playing around with light and shadows. If you're are not happy with that I challenge you to do a double exposure.

HI Michelle, @psychegrrrl I have done double exposure before and feel pretty confident with it. How about I do the same challenge as the one I set you, eg, colour isolation? I have only done this once before and it would be good to do it again.

@stephanies Okay then, that is fine.

Fabulous job! And one of my favorite subjects. I love roses. I must admit, I struggle with low key and high key myself, and like you, I don't have any gadgets to make it easier. To me, low key is just a low light photo where some of the detail is obscured by lack of light.

Thanks Lisa @homeschoolmom What made it more difficult was that last week, the natural light was just awful - dull, flat, wet... so I couldn't get out to take these pictures using that. I am just hopeless at photographing indoors, I am pretty clueless about indoor lighting and flashes, etc. This push taught me alot though.....I know where my weaknesses are and I learnt alot about natural lighting too. Thanks for the push Lisa. :)
