Day 112, Year 3 - Cracking Weather & Crashing Waves At Caister
More long exposures today as it has been a fantastic day weather-wise here in Norfolk, UK and I was thinking yesterday at work that today might be a good day to head to Caister-on-Sea to shoot the zig-zags again as I knew high-tide was around 9am.
I arrived as it was heading out but still plenty of water covering the sea defences. I would have picked another shot with slightly better framing but my ND filter on the front of the lens was getting soaked. I will be more disciplined in future in wiping the lens more often.
1 - Awesome weather on the beach this morning
2 - Trying my first batch of PACT coffee delivered this morning
3 - A great run in the sand through the water before dinner!
Really like this! I have only just purchased a 10 stop ND filter and have not had a chance to use it yet. I have an exposure conversion app, but can you tell me whether you did this all as one exposure or whether you stacked some shorter long exposures? Any other tips?
@caj1311 Hi...first...thank you, I appreciate the comment.
Second the conversion table might be correct but in general whatever the charts say, or in my case the small exposure guide that came with the filter says, you always need to over expose.
So if the original shutter speed with no filter is 1/80th and the chart says 2 minutes with filter, I end going to around 2 1/2 minutes to get the correct exposure. The filter always produces some sort of vignetting which is very pronounced if you're under exposed, and it also gives a blue tint. I like blues so I don't mind but the more underexposed you are the bluer (and darker) the shot it.
Something to bear in mind.
Also, keep it clean...the dust and water or moisture spots that might get on the front show up massively if you're shooting with a small aperture (f22 for example) so even if you're wider it's good to get plenty of wipes, and lens cleaning spray. Hope that helps.
Wow!! Just saw this on the curated page. Just WOW! Instant fav, gorgeous lines/tones/wide angle shot. Wonderful use of long exposure. And re-following. Don't known why I was bumped off your follow list.
@happypat Thank you Pat!
I'm going round some spots in the region at the end of the month.
Shingle Street near Ipswich,
Holkham Beach,
Happisburgh lighthouse,
Hunstanton,
Maybe others too.
Those might be worth a look online to see if you can make it for a shot or two. :)
@stevecameras Thanks Steve for the info. Really looking forward to our week in Wells next the sea but not sure how agile I will be on my legs. Only getting my leg cast off the week before so will no scrambling over rocks etc I think! Hopefully it won't curtail me too much but playing it by ear. Will be visiting lots of places though & hoping to meet up with Judith in Camebridge too. I haven't touched my camera hardly since I broke my ankle easier with the iPhone!
