A rather ominous view of a hippo enjoying(?) a soothing bath. If you have such a view in the wild you are likely in very big trouble. In Africa, hippos kill an average of 2900 people per year, more than lions, elephants, leopards, buffaloes and rhinos combined. Luckily there was some glass between me and this guy - and I still barely survived!
Great shot! My family and I were just discussing how dangerous hippos are to humans! Who knew? They look so calm and gentle!!! Great focus! love the eyes!
Are you serious? Hippos kill that many people?? Did not know that. The more I study this great image, the more I get the feeling you were lucky to have that pane of glass between him and you — his eye is not exactly conveying friendliness, in my opinion.
@lyndemc Thanks Denise, yeah, I didn't think that was a very friendly look in his eye. So I was fact checking the hippo death numbers and there seems to be a wide discrepancy to the claim about how many die at their......paws. The numbers I claim came from a site called the Mother Nature Network, mnn.com, and that number is also cited by the Huffington Post. Who knows how accurate they are? The most surprising thing I came across was the fact that mosquitos are much more deadly, killing 660,000 people per year. Yikes! I think I'll go spray some Off! on me right now!
@k1w1 Thanks Christine, I was lucky to find a small portion of the glass that wasn't all scratched up and cloudy. Gotta search all of the available spots.
