On Approach to Lifeguard Tower

My Get-Pushed challenge this week, issued by Annie, @blueace, was forced perspective. The helicopter (it's a toy, suspended by an invisible string, was positioned about six feet (2 meters) in front of me, and the top of the Laguna Beach lifeguard tower was about 60 feet (18 meters) away.

What I learned in taking this photo: Due to the required deep depth of field to satisfy the forced perspective requirement I had to stop down all the way to f/36, an aperture I didn't know I had. Also the wind was blowing, so the shutter had to be quick, so once again a high ISO was required, in this case 4000. Cropping further challenged the noise factor, but it still came out relatively clear, although my focus point is the helicopter and the background is not quite as sharp as I would have preferred. Forced perspective is more difficult than expected! I still shake my head at the processor in the Sony A7 R II.
Great example of forced perspective. Where do I buy this invisible string?

@blueace OK, Annie, here ya go - my forced perspective attempt.

You tricked me for a split second! Haha. What a cool little toy! I like it much better than those drones we keep seeing everywhere.

What a great learning experience and the resulting composition worked perfectly.

I thought it was real and going to crash so good to know it's a toy! I admire your ability to learn camera bits and bobs

i thought there was something odd about the helicopter :-) then seeing that it's all plastic, i thought it was a toy before i read the caption. excellent response to your challenge! aces!

So happy you're thrilled with your camera! In this instance(again) it's nice to see what the camera can do for you!

Mission accomplished! It really does look to be flying over the top of the tower.
February 12th, 2017
it is obvious that you put a great deal of thought/effort into this project. one would never have guessed the distance between the toy and tower... very clever. a well crafted image..

Stunning piece of creative work Ron its worked out so well, thanks for the narrative on how you managed to achieve the illusion:)
February 12th, 2017
well done, I thought it was real till I read

@maggiemae Ah, invisible string is available to anyone that has Photoshop. Shoot picture with string, erase string from photo, and you have invisible string! Thanks for stopping by to comment!

@cjphoto How did I know you'd like the toy? ;-) Thanks for commenting, Chris - and congrats on the new "other" toy!
February 15th, 2017
@taffy Thanks Taffy - it really was a good learning experience! Gotta love get-pushed. :-)
February 15th, 2017
@naomi Thanks Naomi - had it been a real crashing helicopter I might have had my first newspaper publication! Getting to know the works of the camera really is a source of interest for me. Then again, I'm just a geek I guess.

@summerfield Was it the non-spinning blades or the solid non-spinning rotor that gave it away?
February 15th, 2017
@Weezilou Thanks Louise - I think I'm addicted to Sony! Never thought such words would come out of the mouth of this Nikon devotee!
February 15th, 2017
@lyndemc Thanks Denise! Trust me there were plenty of versions where it definitely did NOT look that way!
February 15th, 2017
@jorlam Again you give me more credit than deserved. I didn't spend any more than half a day or so planning and executing. ;-)
February 15th, 2017
@pcoulson Thanks Peter. I figured maybe someone might get something out of my experience. After all, many of us are on here to improve our craft I figure. And it's fun for me!
February 15th, 2017
@tigerdreamer Happy to have "almost" fooled you. Guess I did better than Ed Wood when it comes to special effects. ;-)

@stray_shooter nothing wrong with geeking out over an interesting subject!
February 16th, 2017
@stray_shooter re: your comments about the camera, and both of us enjoying the Sony we got, we're discussing cameras again (some more!) Maybe you'd consider dinner and insights one evening?
February 17th, 2017
@Weezilou Dinner?!? Say no more! I'll email you shortly.
February 17th, 2017
@stray_shooter LOL! I await your reply!
