The Dipper by suesouthwood

The Dipper

This is Jane who is dressed as a well dipper at the Chalybeate Spring in the Pantiles in Tunbridge Wells. The spring water is iron rich and for a small fee you can usually purchase a glass full to drink. I have to say it tastes disgusting, but unfortunately (or fortunately, whichever way you look at it) at the moment the spring has dried up due to lack of rain.
The natural spring was discovered in about 1600 by a young nobleman who was feeling worse for wear after a heavy drinking session at a nearby estate. He felt so much better that he declared the water to be health giving, and soon noble visitors from London and elsewhere began to flock to the area. This was the start of Tunbridge Wells, so called as it was not far from Tonbridge (then called Tunbridge). Confused? People still are!
