familiar things - an exercise

one of the exercises that freeman patterson recommends in his book "photography and the art of seeing) is to put a wide-angle or standard lens in the camera, put it beside your bed and as soon as you wake up in the morning shoot at least five from the prone position and at least five sitting on the edge of the bed or before reaching the bathroom.

of those photographs that i took yesterday morning when i woke up, i kept coming to this one. it's the morning sun hitting the fence that separates the building from the next-door parking lot. i see this most mornings and i know it's the shadow of the fence. but in this morning, they actually look like 'gumby' shadows. three of them!

methinks they're out to get me, just because i hated that damn gumby cartoon. i mean his voice alone is a pain in my ears and he's not wearing pants. oh, don't get me started with this cartoon characters not wearing pants, like pooh!

omg! how did we get into cartoons! if i keep this up, i just might get kicked out of the book club. now i really won't be able to sleep!

:-)
Oh Oh Oh.. I just got my book today... and now I have to play catch up.. This is really cool.. and I do in fact see gumby. maybe I need to go to sleep!!

@cheribug - thank you, my cheribug. i must admit i'm enjoying doing the exercises and it really opens your eyes to a lot of things when you have your camera. see, i'm not the only one seeing gumby!

I just read that part of the book last night! When I was up way too late, not able to sleep. I did not get to do the exercise, as I am way too busy with school. If I have to, i will enjoy all of you guys' shots, then do the exercises later. What you guys are doing is helping me process the book. So that is good. This shot is very moody and interesting.

Huh, feeling like I'm missing out. - first I have heard of this book and I think Gumby is a a green thing? Grew up in South Africa we didn't have a Gumby, lol didn't even have a tv until I was 10 ( & no I'm not yet past the 1/2 century mark. Yikes that's the first time I've thought of that !)

Very interesting idea. Neat shot

@sianipops - my younger siblings used to waste their time watching gumby cartoons. i always have to invoke the "older sister" privileges whenever i see them watching gumby. no, you didn't miss out on that gumby thing - http://365project.org/summerfield/365/2011-01-13 that's what he looked like although he's just dark grey in black and white tv!

and yes, you're missing out on the book. hehe! check this out: http://365project.org/discuss/themes-competitions/18604/join-in-the-august-photography-book-club and you can join anytime you want.

Your brain patterns work the same as mine do - higgeldepiggledy then some one remarks, how did we get on to that subject! You are very obedient going through these exercises! I think I would get a bit rebellious!

Love the play on light and dark. Not sure I would be too popular if I used the camera when I first get up as it is dark and I don't put a light on in the bedroom! The flash would be quite a shock. It is only starting to get light around 7am and I've already been up about an hour!

I've never heard of gumby but this is a great abstract. I'm struggling with the familiar things exercise - I tried locking myself in the bathroom but I couldn't come up with anything.

@maggiemae - i like that higgeldepiggledy; does it come with age, you think? :-) i think by being higgeldepiggledy i'm actually being rebellious! thank you, maggiemae.

@salza - sally, there was one morning a few days ago, i woke up and the first thing i did was turn on my tablet. but i forgot that when i last used it before sleeping, the camera was on. it was kind of a shock to see myself first thing in the morning. hahahaha! thank you, sally.

@shutterbug17 - aww, i'm so glad i made you laugh, jennifer. thank you.

@steeler - thank you, howard.

@dh - you never heard of gumby probably because you are way too young, he's an old cartoon and thankfully no one's thought of reviving or remaking him (murphy's law is just because i verbalized that horrible thought, i'd bet you there'd be one soon!). in any case, as you can see, i, too, am struggling. seeing gumby in shadows is struggling, methinks. thank you, dh. just keep on clicking, dear and there'd be one 'eureka' for you soon.

Too funny to see how our brain always tries to find patterns.

Well here's another county heard from. I did like Gumby and Pokey too. He wasn't a person so I don't think I really ever paid attention to what he was wearing (or not). And to me, this does not look like Gumby (he had a slanted head) but I do think it's a great geometric shadow which I just naturally like. If anything if reminds me of the slats on those plastic chaise lounges they put by swimming pools.
