biker girl

in freeman patterson's book "photography and the art of seeing", he says that "a photographer 'stops the world', arrests and holds a fleeting moment in time, usually a fraction of a second."

whilst waiting for the lights to change going north at spadina avenue, there were several people on their bikes crossing from the other direction of the intersection. i tried to photograph each of them, but this shot stands out the most. why wouldn't it when the subject looks good. i wasn't trying for a panning shot, but just to capture the detail of this fast-moving subject.

thank you for your kind visits and comments; know that they are truly appreciated.
fabulous shot, and wonderful use of selective color! i think the reason i have so much trouble deleting shots is for this reason - once the shot is gone, that moment of time is gone, too.

Excellent! I haven't really been able to do any of the topics so far this week! Some student I am!

@olivetreeann - go for katie's summary then read the book later. that's what i'm doing this week. :-) thank you.

@eniaral - thank you. it's a really huge problem for me. i take about a million shot of just one subject, unless it's blurry to the point of crappy, i don't erase it. like you said.

I like the caption, and the shot

that's a big purse... brave to bike in flip flops and no helmet.

@lesip Ride softly and carry a big purse! My motto! Hee hee

Good shot, Vikki! she looks a bit uncomfortable or nervous steering this bike!

@sarasdadandmom - i think you like her legs! :-) thank you, terry.

@lesip - i suppose it's big enough for a camera and a lens? :-) here, if you're over 18 helmet is not mandatory. and most of the times, with women especially, they don't wear them properly anyway. something to do with looking good or the hair, methinks! thank you, leslie.

@espyetta - no, she's rather capable. i think it was either the heat or she saw me taking a picture of her, or probably both. thank you, MB.

@summerfield Glad you did not make her wipe out! hee hee Now THAT would have been a photo though!

Great candid shot

No helmet? Oh, she must know when she is going to fall and stops just before that happens...not! Nice capture and photo, but people should wear a helmet.

oh my, riding a bike in the city, no helmet, with flip-flops, what a big no-no, plus that big bag. what a wonderful capture. too bad you aren't the bicycle police. great shot, interesting quote from the book, too.

Great capture, love the selective colouring!

Like that look of concentration on her face, wonder what was stopping her world, nice processing too

@bkbinthecity - thank you, brian.

@tammeray - thank you, i've posted my response and i've tagged you.

@mikegifford - young girl's either too vain to wear helmet or just doesn't care. thank you, mike.

@redpants - thank you, sue.

@catsmeowb - no, she's over 18 so she can ride around without helmet as it's optional for adults. under 18, it is mandatory. which is stupid beyond stupid, if you ask me. thank you, camille.

@salza - thank you, sally.

@claireuk - probably didn't get lucky the night before? :-) thank you, my friend claire.

I love the look of concentration, like she is afraid of losing her balance, and I can identify with that when the world starts spinning too fast

I like your selective coloring with her standing out in full color against the B&W background.
