"what if you could live your life over again? and again? and again?"
my get pushed challenger this week is dh (delena) @dh and her challenge is to take "a shot inspired by your favourite novel."
i have quite a few favourite novels and i had a hard time picking which one. i lie, i have actually enjoyed it because i had an excuse to re-read three of them. in the end i had to settle for "replay" by ken grimwood.
the novel is about time travel, in the tradition of Jack Finney's 'Time and Again", and asks the provocative question: "What if you could live your life over again, knowing the mistakes you'd made before?"
Forty-three-year old Jeff Winston gets several chances to do just that. Trapped in a tepid marriage and a dead-end job, he dies in 1988 and wakes to find himself in 1963, at the age of 18. It's all the same, but different: he knows what the future holds. He bets on every Kentucky Derby and every World Series games and he wins all of them and makes himself a millionaire. But each time he dies at the same time, the same day, the same year. Given the many chances, he relives his life different from each replay, keenly aware of what has happened and what the future holds.
this week, i have to re-read this book, plus "the hotel on the corner of bitter and sweet" by jamie ford, and "time and again" by jack finney. after i have settled on "replay", the challenge then becomes how to depict this in photograph.
thank you for your kind views and comments; know that they are truly appreciated.
@dh - not too too late, i hope. i had to re-read three novels this week, then had to plot out the photo. it came to me in the middle of the night, so here it is. now i go back to sleep. hope this fits the bill. thank you.
Amazing! You depicted it very well. I loved Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet and will have to add Replay to my list to read. Have you read Time Travelers Wife? It's a good one. Fav
Well done- you could have also thrown a calendar in there for good measure. I do like the repeating watches though- that is a clever way to depict the scenario. The plot also reminds me of that movie (probably a book too) where the female lead goes back to her high school reunion and somehow ends up back in time during her high school days. Since she knows the future she tries her best to avoid making the same mistakes in her own life and also to improve the life of her friends by giving them tips for inventions and such. In the end nothing works out right and she ends up in the same spot she was in when she went back to the reunion. I think the idea was that some things are "meant to be" and in the eyes of fate there is nothing you can do to stop them. For the life of me I cannot remember the name of that movie or the actors who starred in it (except for Nicholas Cage I think)! Oh well, that was "Much Ado About Nothing". Excellent shot for the challenge!
Congrats on making the finalist list! I stopped reading your write up because I want to read this book! I have often thought lately ...about would I want to start again, but I would not. I want to be in good health, out of pain, be able to run again, but I don't want to just go back and do it again. I am happy with how it was the first time!
@espyetta - nothing in my write up gives the story away. you just would have to read it. it's kind of interesting really. it doesn't give you any linear time something something all those technical crap. gripping, really! thank you, MB.
