on the menu for tonight's dinner - steamed okra. some people are turned off by its slimy juice but okra is one of my favourite foods even as a little girl. there are a lot of really good recipes for okra, but where i grew up okra is cooked along with a melange of squash, string beans, tomatoes, eggplant, and watercress leaves, with pieces of meat or without but cooked with shrimp paste. i prefer to have it steamed and eaten with steamed jasmine rice, with fish sauce.
thank you for your kind visits and comments; know that they are genuinely appreciated. nine more o's to go. yes, getting short on ideas, but, no coaching from the audience, please! :-)
You must be so healthy eating all these fresh and green foods from childhood! I am too because I was forced to eat them! However being of a venerable age now, I can choose to eat hamburgers if I want!
@amandal - they are just about four inches i think. i'm not sure, i don't usually measure my food, i just eat them. :-D i kid you. you've not had okra? some people are really turned off by their slimy juice. but it's not the same as the slime in oyster. :-) thank you, kiddo.
I've had it fried and frozen but in soup (not frozen but warm in the soup). I've never bought or prepared it besides the soup kind:). I've not been drinking...seriously. cold and need to warm up with some soup, though.
Oh but you have done so well with all the o theme! I cannot honestly say whether or not I've ever had okra. I guess if I have had some, it didn't leave any lasting impression, good or bad!
Not crazy about okra- but the reason is the one time I'd bought a bag of what I thought was mixed vegetables was actually mixed vegetables with okra and something else- was not expecting the taste and I guess just decided I didn't like it. But that first recipe sounds good- and I'd probably like it now. However- looking at the picture is the best!
As for Niagara- did you get my email? That is email #2? I'm thinking you did by the times. 12 noon is good- or we can meet even earlier if you'd like. Since Jeff is coming up I've told him you have first priority that day! The American side is very pretty and I'm hoping this time we'll have sunshine and no rain. You had mentioned the overlook so we'll do that first and then decide what we want to do after that. I should probably leave Niagara by 6 pm. Jeff has to go to work the next day so I know he doesn't want to get home too late and it will take us 4 1/2 hrs from Batavia. So if you'd like to meet earlier than noon I can do it. I can't wait to see you again- such fun!!
Love okra! Of course, mom always prepared it in the Greek style with tomatoes, olive oil, onions and garlic, and it was delicious, but I think the prep of the fresh veggies is a little slimy! Wonderful close-up of this yummy and misunderstood veggie!
