frozen

for the second year in a row, the extreme cold temperatures coupled with some snow storms rendered niagara falls frozen.

christine @k1w1 and cathy @cathrinemitch took me with them in their trek to niagara falls. we had a blast!

we got to niagara falls just as the sun was setting down and the winds had kicked in making the temperature rather cold compared to during the day. there were quite a few tourists around and plenty of photographers whose purpose was to see and capture the spectacle that is the frozen falls and the river.

the river was completely covered in thick blocks of ice that do not move at all, fissures appear on the surface from the fast moving water underneath it. most of the american falls, seen above, are completely frozen except for a small portion. only the bridal veil falls (on the right next to the rocks) continue to flow. the boulder-like ice sculptures are the result of the water's impact as it hit the rocks below it and froze due to the constant extreme cold temperatures the region has had. to appreciate this fantastic sight, look at this posting from last year - http://365project.org/summerfield/365-again/2014-08-19 - you can see part of the walkways on the lower right hand of the above photograph.

a full view of the american falls is shown here at the start of last winter's cold spell - http://365project.org/summerfield/365-again/2013-12-29

the railings were covered with so much ice and snow that getting a good vantage point was not possible (for shorter people - like me :-P). the plus side is there is a bit of elevation to see this spectacle. only part of the much larger canadian falls are frozen and the force of its flow underneath the river is the main reason for the surface fissures.

thank you for your kind visits and comments; know that you are so much appreciated that is why i froze my butt off to get this for you, my friends.

and a big "thank you" to chris and cathy for taking me (finally!).
spectacular !

As a kid I used to go visit NF on a regular basis as my grandparents, though Canadian, used to live on the American side. Of course we always went to the falls - to the point where I became bored with the visits......until I returned this past summer and came to realize my lack of appreciation. What a spectacular place! I have saved somewhere in my files of photos some of the colored light photos as they are shining on the frozen falls from last year. Something that nobody nowhere can reproduce or top. I hope you are able to treat us to some more of these amazing sights.

Wow, that is a LOT of snow!! Believe it or not, I have visited Niagara Falls in February.....many, many moons ago! I remember it being very cold and some parts were inaccessible, but nothing like this! I still remember the grass and the tree branches being frozen, though....this sounds like a great photo meetup.....cold, but worth it!
