at the sugar beach

so-called because of the white sand in this beach which i would guess would've been imported from somewhere else because everything around here is dark sand, not white.

so it is but fitting that i post this in response to my get pushed challenge from @jocasta. she challenged me to "photograph something from an ant's point of view".

today is canada day thus we're not working, the lucky lot of us, as others do have to work. came here after breakfast this morning. nothing exciting, but for the ant, there were a lot of food scaps on the sand as well as a few discarded chocolate wrappers. should be a good day for it.

thank you for your kind visits and comments; know that they are truly appreciated.

UPDATE #1: monique nadeau, @moniquenadeau who is a fine photographer (when she wants to) and an excellent writer, wrote a story inspired by this post. if you are so inclined, you can read it here

UPDATE #2: i am guessing (as i could not find a relevant article or proof) that this was so named because it is right beside the Redpath Sugar Mill, and/or because of the promenade which is part of the beach/park that is lined with maple trees.
@jocasta - does this fit the bill?

one wonders where all the people might be. If more come for Canada Day, then there will be even more remains for Mr. Ant.

forgot to say this this is a lovely pastel shot worthy of the name "sugar beach"

In alabama ALL the beaches are "sugar" beaches! when are you coming?! (;
Terrific shot ! the low PoV makes it a very unique beach image! Brave of you to get so close to the threatening sand with your camera!

@grammyn - i had rapped it in a plastic bag and half-buried it in the sand, a few grains made their way into the barrel of the lens. felt like an idiot afterwards.

I love those chairs! The colour of the umbrellas reminds me of candyfloss. Fabulous pov, I hope that the sand didn't damage the camera.

@grammyn @summerfield Osia @panthora has a good trick, living at the beach as she does... She carried a soft tooth brush in her bag! I'm sure they sell fancy varieties, but hers his a terrific job...and I now carry one as well!

Happy Canada Day Miss Vikki! How I wish I were there today...picnic, music, and cake... And I'll miss the Halifax Tattoo this year as well. But all that said, know I'm thinking of you and all our Canadian friends and wishing you a sun-splashed day at this gorgeous beach!

Love the pink umbrellas!

Lovely shot......those pink umbrellas are priceless!!! Yes, the trick that Louise, @Weezilou mentioned was recommended to me by the camera repair people. When I was picking up my freshly repaired and cleaned D90, I noticed that one of the knobs on my 810 was grinding like there was sand in it. I asked them if they could clean it for me, and also mentioned that I take a lot of photos at the beach, and inevitably sand seems to get into my equipment and my bags. Asked if they had a trick for keeping them clean, and they just casually said, oh, yeah, just carry an old toothbrush with you and gently clean every part of the camera and lens. Works like a charm..... :-)))

Great pov. I heard you have a birthday today. Hope you have a great day

oh yes.... fits the bill perfectly. I love the POV but apologise that I suggested something that might have wrecked your camera. I like how the beach is still deserted and also like the repeating patterns of chairs and umbrellas into the distance. The accompanying story is fantastic - what a great writer - will be following her.

Well of course an ant would be hanging out at a place called Sugar Beach. This ant has a pretty good photographic eye. My ant would have been viewing a chocolate cake close-up. Don't people always bring chocolate cakes to the beach? Happy belated Canada Day!
