memories of christmas past #2

when i started working, i made it a point that we were never short on food especially at Christmas. far cry from when we were growing up in the old country. we await Christmas anxiously for a whole year because that was the only time we would each have a whole egg all to ourselves. fried sunny side up, served in our own individual plates and we could pig on tasty bread or what we now call sliced bread. if my father had a good job, we'd even have butter. the main fare in our house during those times and what my cousins looked forward to when coming to our house, was my father's spaghetti with corned beef sauce. none of the other relatives seemed to know how it was done and it was my father's one culinary glory.

it is still the main fare in my father's house even these days, and that is if he doesn't forget to put the corned beef in the sauce or if he inadvertently forgets to actually cook the spaghetti.

in the last two Christmases of my mother's life, i made it a point to fill the dinner table with all the food that i knew she would enjoy. i had an admirer who was marketing director of the biggest dairy manufacturer in the country and he would send me the biggest gift baskets filled with goodies. or a themed ice cream cake. but in that last Christmas in 1974, of all the food laid out on the table, my mother asked for chocolate marble ice cream. i sent my two younger sisters to the big drugstore that carried the premier brands of ice cream in the country. they told us they bought german chocolate instead. my mother shrugged her shoulders and said it would do. so imagine how her face lit up when during the midnight snack,they opened the gallon of chocolate marble ice cream!

rice crispies triangle dipped in white chocolate and dressed in bits of peppermint. giant marshmallow dipped in bits of candy cane candy i can tolerate. i hate candy canes or any sweets that are minty, but a small hint of peppermint i can always tolerate.
I love mint- all kinds and I'm so glad I just came from the photo club holiday gathering where I had one mint chocolate candy so now I will not crave this sweet after seeing your picture! yum

You're such a wonderful story teller! You really must work on the book!

Did you make these treats (or were they part of the Fun Food at a Christmas party?) They look awfully delicious to me! I do love Peppermints! (They also remind me of the story line in The Five Little Peppers -and How They Grew ... those peppermints were such a treat!)

This is so Christmasy and I have to ask, did you make these treats? I've never seen anything as tempting as that marshmallow, but never even considered that as something you could make at home

@Weezilou @summerfield

lousie, dixie, no, these were bought from the drugstore at the bottom of my office building. they were on sale for $2 each. i suppose they'd be easy to make. if you had made rice crispy squares before then i would imagine dipping a square into some thick chocolate sauce and let it cool down, it would be the same thing. and the marshmallow, perhaps dip them in cream and then roll them on mint bits then microwave it for a few seconds. no, i didn't make these, honest! hahaha!

@summerfield LOL...well, they're beautiful! Yes, the rice crispy treats would be easy to make, but they're not especially a fave of mine. The marshmallow, now, however...

@Weezilou - that marshmallow is the giant kind. you could make them into pillows, perhaps!

We meandered in a shopping mall yesterday and there these were in Williams-Sonoma! Let me tell you that even a BIG marshmallow for $8.95 was beyond the pale, and a 20% discount didn't make it look any better! Give it a week, and they'll be hoping to move them at 75% off!

@Weezilou - $8.75?!?!?!? and i thought the $2 i paid for was too much i could've bought a whole bag.
