fringed orchids

last of the allen garden series for this week.

i had wanted to follow the ROYGBIV sequence of colours -- red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. this was how my elementary science teacher explained it. red, yellow and blue are primary colours; the combining of any of those colours produces the secondary colours. thus, orange is between red and yellow because if you mix those two primary colours together, you get the secondary colour orange. green sits between yellow and blue because mixing blue and yellow would give you green. here's the tricky part. blue and red mixed together produces violet. however, in the rainbow spectrum, there is a very thin line of colour between violet and blue which is closer to blue but has a tinge of violet. it is called indigo.

i am not an expert in the colour wheel or colour spectrum, in fact, i try to ignore the bloody thing. my science teacher said it's enough for me to know the three primary colours as well as the resulting secondary and tertiary colours. beyond that, i would have to consult a more complicated chart which nobody wants to do except those who really need or want to know.

to complicate matters for you, my dear friends, a colour nerd pointed out to me that my violet is actually purple because if i would just consult the colour spectrum, violet is closer to blue and purple is closer to red. i don't know where to find that colour spectrum but if you know where i can find him or her or it, i would have to give him or her or it a severe talking to as now i have a migraine over some colour that i don't really care about. i may even beat the crap out of that colour spectrum.

and by the way, that there is not pink. it's lilac. there, more headaches for you.

in summary, @northy is right, colour sucks.
Ah, trying to understand the color might suck but colors do not suck! Otherwise your picture with the purple bubblegum would have just been another picture! Sometimes we don’t need to understand we just need to enjoy which is what I’m doing with this picture of whatever color this flower is

This orchid is gorgeous, doesn't matter what color you call it. Our rainbow month is more forgiving. We take all hues of purple/violet/whatever.

How beautiful! I'd love to have one.

As well as all that science stuff there's the not insignificant fact that different people 'see' some colours differently. I'm with you and @northy, b&w rules (mostly).

I'd love to have a couple of these beauties in my garden and I don't care what colour they are. I love colour but I'm not getting bogged down with shade variations. My take on indigo and violet is very relaxed :)

@robz @merrelyn
it was easier in February when all was just black and white!

Beautiful colors.

you know you love colour really. No need to stress over definitions. I did that last year and it got me nowhere. I thought you explanation though, was quite enlightening. These fringed orchids are looking a bit pinky, and that is just fine. Indigo is always the one I have problems with.
