i'm your one-hit wonder by summerfield

i'm your one-hit wonder

my second project from another youtube tutorial. truth be told, i got into this project fully loaded with enthusiasm and enough confidence. the bubble was easily reduced to a huge burst, and an overwhelming sense of "wtf am i thinking that i could do this!"

fyi, this is supposed to be a painting of colourful clouds. i have my old photos of sunrise clouds and sunset clouds for inspiration. only, i forgot that i cannot draw, and clouds are simply not easy to draw. i could not even follow what that guy on youtube was drawing so looking at this, i am looking at a dragon that's being eaten by a large bear that's being humped by a large nasty feline. and then there is the little lizard that could. took me four hours to make a mess on my floor that i just mopped last night, as i dropped the bloody brush whilst mixing paint. thank goodness it was a small brush and not the bigger brush that i had to start with. paints were all over my mouse and my table. plus i am left feeling guilty that i had to wash these brushes and containers and i just couldn't bear to think when the paints coagulate in the pipes. ugh!

i'm not making excuses for this sorry artwork, but the guy is using some brushes that i don't have, and having been raised by my frugal and resourceful mother, i have to make do with what i have. i looked online how much one brush costs and it was $44! forty-four f***ing dollars. i had to look at my receipts to see how much the brushes i have bought cost and i almost died. i've spent close to three hundred dollars on paints and brushes. there goes my retirement money!

do you think i should just buy meself a piano and learn how to play properly?

but, i want an honest and forthright critique, folks. please don't make it quick and painless. i can take it.
You don't need to buy yourself a piano, Vikki! Your mother would be delighted if I just gave you mine!
I will even make sure it gets to TO and up the stairs to your place!!
But, seriously - this is really nice. love the way the colours blend together so naturally.

Your first mistake is trying to draw! Don't! painting is entirely different from drawing! Drawing is about lines painting is about blending. My art teacher used to tell me to turn the picture upside down so my eyes would not force me to paint what I thought it should look like . The change in perspective lets you focus on the shapes better. This is a beautiful cloudscape and an amazing second only effort! Don't give up! What kind of paint are you using?

I think this piece is amazing compared to what I have tried to do. I’ve found painting really hard to do, especially with getting the colours perfectly and blending. However, I do honestly think you did a great attempt! I am not in any position to tell you what to do, but I think if you blended in the foreground clouds to give a more “blurred” effect, it might’ve added points to perspective. Otherwise, it’s very nice!

I like it, it looks like puff the magic dragon to me! Although I have done many artsy thing in my life, one thing I never could was draw or paint.

Why do you flog yourself so hard? This is amazing! Clouds are not the easiest subject. And neither is a wave.
I love the description with the bear, lizard and all that zoology... Don;t so many of us look up in the sky and see forms int he clouds?
I really saw this as a glorious sunset sky, as we sometimes have here. And as we have so often seen here on 365 as photograpphed by so many.
It is natural that you 'see' the 'defects' in the painting, because you had something in mind and it did not turn out quite as you imagined. But be nice to yousrself. What would you say to a child if he or she showed you this painting? Say the same to yourself, on the same tone. (i really hope you wouldn't beat the crap out of the vitrtual kid...) Be nice to yourself. You are one step ahead.
I really suppose you didn;t have Monalisa in mind and it turned out a humping bear cloud... And even if you did have Monalisa in mind, this is your vision of Monalisa. And if you screw, who are we to judge? You are one step ahead: you tried.
The costs: everything is freaking expensive. And it seems even more expensive wen you blame yourself so much. Take a nicer treat on yourself and you will find that 300 dollars is not your entire retirement money.
As for the dropping of paint and brush... I drop my brush on the painting. On the floor. i drop water on the laptop. But hey, when I was the dishes, i also drop a cup or a plate. And when I cook something, it spills so often. There is a nice meme with a shaprp pencil and a used pencil and it reads: It's nice to look sharp when you do nothing.
In all honesty, cross my heart and hope to die, I would hang this painting in my studio. I like the colour palette and the fact that it is so close to abstract, yet depicting a scene in nature. (The colour palette reminds me of Munch's Scream, which I do have in my studio as a framed puzzle.)
So, dear,if you buy that piano, will you be nicer to yourself? If yes, then by all means buy the piano. It does not make a mess (like paints), but you will probably place a dripping mug on it or who knows what.
And to close this (probably not even your mom lectured you this much, so please don;t be mad at me) by all means don;t give up painting. Go on. With every brush stroke you learn sumething new. Not even DaVinci painted Monalisa directly. He first had to learn how to paint. As for the brushes, save 20 dollars for 2 months, and by Christmas you could treat yourself with that nice brush. (not to mention that black friday is approaching, maybe you get a nice discount).
Be kind to yourself!

I think this is in the style of the Impressionists IMHO..

So first, don't be so hard on yourself! Second, you don't need to know how to draw! And third, don't compare yourself to a "pro" who's leading the tutorial! Art is individual and the same subject will render differently depending on the artist and her perspective and technique. I can see what you mean about the characters (LOL!), but I also see a very good grasp of color and form. I actually really like what you've done here! My only "advice" would be to loosen up, be kind to yourself and HAVE FUN!! (Even if it costs a s--t load.) You rock!

well it immediately looked like a cloudscape to me, vikki! and i clicked on it to look properly as i liked it, and then found your narrative. i agree with others' comments to have fun and see where it takes you and be less hard on yourself! i have always been hopeless at drawing and painting - not that i've tried much - but on recent visits to my mother (who came to art late in life but now even calls herself an artist!) i have messed about with her oil paints and had such fun. first two efforts were hopeless but i really quite liked the third and, even if i hadn't, i loved every minute of the creating :)

I like it, it would be a sunset I'd go out to photograph. That's what I thought it was at first glance. It's not an easy subject and you've made a lovely job of it. The most important part is that you enjoy your artwork and I hope you continue to post your work on here

I like the colours, it’s obviously clouds even though I do see a dragon at the top. I was going to suggest more blending but what the frig would I know, I can’t draw or paint to save my life. Well done for giving it a go

I like it! Maybe I tried to hard, but I didn't see a dragon, nor a bear. Just clouds! And the colors you used give me a real sunset feeling. This might have to do with the fact that every single day the sky is just blue here....but, please do not be too hard on yourself.
With regards to your spill - it just happens and you do not what to know what I'm cleaning up (coffee, milk, melon, pineapple - basically everything liquid and slippery) in a household with 1 husband and 2 teenagers...
Having 1 daughter still taking piano lessons, I know that that is really hard work too (and not cheap either).

Lucille but where's Negan?

I actually thought that to learn how to paint took quite a few lessons on how to do just rudimentary things. I honestly didn’t know you could paint a whole picture on your first or second lesson/session. I love this cloud photo and I absolutely concur with @monikozi’s thoughts. Please don’t be so hard on yourself, this endeavor is supposed to be fun! 🤗

I am not much of an artist. This is a bold show of colors. I'm such a realist about artwork, it's probably too bold for me. The contrasts between the colors seem too strong. But I think this is an accepted style and if it's yours, it a good painting.

I see clouds- nicely painted clouds. And I have a Fine Arts degree so I know what I'm talking about. (o: I am collecting all my brushes still left in my desk from my painting days and sending them to you (don't worry there's only 6 of them!). You once gave me a precious gift because you believed in my abilities. While these brushes may not be equal to what you gave to me, they bear the same sentiment. Watch your mail!
October 27th, 2020
@olivetreeann - oh, ann, that is so sweet of you, but maybe you should paint again? then we can have a 365 and painting convention with our other friends. i shall bugger the mailman and ask him 'you have mail for me?' like i do every time i see him. 🤣

@summerfield I was never really good at painting- I liked drawing but I wasn't that great at that either. Actually if I had known how much I was going to enjoy photography and if all the things we can do in the computer now with a photograph existed in my college days I think I would have become a graphic artist. So I'm happy to send them to someone who is going to use them!

@olivetreeann - thank you so much. much much appreciated.♥♥♥
