lavander grow kit

my sister, the artist, in the philippines had been asking for lavender seeds for a long time. i've been scouring all stores since the pandemic began for lavender seeds with no luck. i could've ordered from amazon but since it is a 'seasonal product' it would take about six months to be delivered and it's not even guaranteed (meanwhile they would've charged my credit card. no way!).

yesterday in my forays around the danforth, i passed by the hardware store for some bin liners when i saw these lavender grow kits on sale for $6.99. because i was already at the cash and my purchase was being rang, i grabbed one of these. i was preparing a box for my sister and it was almost full but i managed to squeeze in the kit. then today, i needed to go to the area once again and i passed by the hardware store again, i went in to check if there were still some. there were three left and i just grabbed and paid for them. since the box was full anyway, i opened the kits and put the peats and seed packets into a much smaller box which i managed to squeeze in. now the box is sealed and will be picked up for shipping tomorrow. when i told my sister, she was quite emotional. she's been wanting to have lavender in her garden for a long time and she couldn't find any cuttings or seeds. the box would probably arrive in late august.

that sister, vivian, had sent me an earlier message asking me to ask you my friends for a favour. i have told you before that she teaches the bible and arts to the poor children in her neighbourhood. she also helps them with their homework since most of the parents of those children have not had education or any schooling themselves. some children don't even actually go to school which i find ridiculous. i think that all governments must educate their citizens up to at least high school, and make such mandatory.

the favour she wants me to ask you on her behalf is, if you have any old children's books and if you can spare a couple of boxes of crayons and some pencils, to please send them to her. i must emphasize she doesn't want or need money, she wants those old books that she can put in her living room where she teaches the children so that the children can enjoy them or learn from them. especially now with the pandemic, she wants each child to have a box of crayons and not share with other children. she said that the local crayons, no matter that its brand is crayola, are no good at all. as i said, she does not need or want money. if you are so inclined to send her a small parcel with the crayons and old children's books that you can spare, please let me know by email (my email address is found at the end of my profile) or leave me a comment in any of my photos and i will send you her address.

if you have read this far, i salute you and thank you very much.

Have read all the way to the bottom and will see what I can do about the books. Did she specify the reading level? You are such a good person to give so much to others! Love your lavender photo and I hope your sister enjoys them!

Nice colors! I hope the lavender will grow well in the Philippines (and of course in Canada)! I read to the end and might come back to you after my travels in August. There is a sticky note next to my computer now. Books in English I assume? And approximate age group?

Nice gift. I will see what I can do. Does she need drawing paper to go with the crayons, or containers/pouches to hold the crayons?
June 21st, 2021
@randystreat - drawing paper would be nice, too, as i ran out of paper to send her. used to be at the office we had these "banners" in the common printer that came with the printouts so that we knew who owned the printed document, but since the pandemic everyone learned to just save and send documents by email. but paper might be heavy and might cost too much for postage. but thank you so much, kathy. much appreciated.

I will see what I can collect- this is probably a tacky question, but do the crayons have to be new? I have a huge tin of them that my sons used growing up but they are very used. Of course I would not send her nubs but many are not as long as they are when you first take them out of the box!
