under seige

Toronto was in for a rude awakening this afternoon. we were hit by a massive storm - high winds, hail, heavy downpour, tornado threats, ground touching lightning and heavy loud thunderclaps, flash flooding. trees were down and a lot of places were heavily flooded, even those places where flood was never a problem previously. what's more, reports say about 65,000 people have no power in their homes.

it started foggy this morning and an on-and-off sprinkling of rain, then mist and fog. the storm was to hit us by 3:00 that's when i decided i'd go to do some banking as the sun was still shining and it didn't look like the storm's going to arrive for some time. when i got downstairs, a matter of not even two minutes, big drops of rain has started and the sky was so dark and heavy it looked like it was after dusk. i went back up and sure enough, the big downpour was well on its way. i watched those menacing storm clouds approach us in the southeast. in a matter of two minutes, we were pounded by the storm, the thunder seemed like it was just happening in my balcony.

my friend who was in downtown before the storm started, offered to come and give me a ride to the bank, which is only 3.5 kilometers from my building. normally i get there by walking. my friend did not arrive until 8, the setting sun made a brief appearance amidst light rain and that was it.

for week 35 of the 52 captures challenge, the challenge was 'under'. apparently, according to the news, we are still under a storm watch.
That looks and sounds an impressive storm.
