"everybody loves the sound of a train in the distance; everybody thinks it's true"
- 'train in the distance' by paul simon -
today i went to the Toronto Roundhouse. they have a theatre there where Edith Nesbit's "The Railway Children" is playing (i should take the grandkids there in the summer to see the play). there is also an exhibition of old railway cars of Canada. the train pictured above was especially imported for the play. i won't pretend to know wherefrom it had been imported; i read the story several weeks ago in the newspapers but the old brain doesn't retain that much information anymore (maybe i've used up all the gigs in my memory disk hahahaha!).
i love the sound of a train in the distance. it evokes a lot of childhood memories. the toot-tooting sounds call to mind the drawing in the very first book we had as young children: the dark long train with smoke billowing out of the top of the first car; the uniformed staff; the passengers lugging their heavy valises.
i had not taken the train until i was well in my late twenties when i lived in luxembourg. it fed my notion of the train travel i imagined above, except for the smoke that billowed. the train ride in america and canada is of course very much different. it is more romantic to take the train in europe - definitely.
the condominium buildings by the lake look like a giant poster behind the roundhouse. it is amazing what treasure you can find in your city. 365 is making me do just that: explore my city and find its numerous treasures. enjoy!
The new builldings @ the background, the old train in front. A wonderfull picture! And I do, I love the sound of a train in the distance, especially at night. I can hear them because I live in the neighbourhood of a trainstation.
