page 123, The Man Who Loved Books Too Much by Allison Hoover Bartlett
the word today is "nineteenth".
today was a totally crappola day. windy and miserable as dark clouds hung over toronto like it was going out of style. and it was either drizzling or misty; at one point i got caught in a brief downpour as i did my errands. it did lighten up very briefly in the afternoon, but the winds carried more westerly clouds and we were in darkness again.
coming out of the store, i noticed that the seagulls were in full force at the parking lot. hundreds of these obnoxious birds were flying about and they seemed to very slowly glide. so i took a shot at nineteen of them and this is what i got. nine birds up in the air. where're the other ten, you ask? well, they were so quick by the time i got my camera out so the ten were already waddling on the ground, where else! there was a garbage bin at the nearby mcdonald's so that's where the other ten were converged. i couldn't fit all of them in the shot.
well, that is my story and i'm stickin' to it!
(processed in picnik.)
Wonderful catch, summerfield!! Loved your funny story . . great to laugh this late in the day. Beautiful blue sky and great framing with the trees. Hope that the other ten are enjoy their "Mickey D" lunch!!
@danig - seagulls are there to piss us off for their thieving ways, and also practice for shooting birds in flight. at least we practice with our cameras! thanks, DG.
@bkbinthecity - good for you. kinda difficult though, isn't it? thanks.
@karenann - glad i made you laugh. my mission here is done :-) and i'm sure the bastards, i mean the gulls enjoyed their lunch as they made a mess all over! thanks, karenann.
@jannkc - thank you, jann. i'll give these bird shots some time. i'm pretty sure i'd be able to get a decent one, perhaps in five years. hahaha!
@steeler@steeler - thank you, howard. same here. at the city hall where lots of people converge everyday, the seagulls are in there, too! perhaps because they know where they can get food easily as people are not careful with their garbage in public places.
Well you were more creative about this shot than I would have been! I would have pulled out a calendar and shot the 19th (hehe). And for a grey day those clouds look pretty blue. The wonders of processing? Seagulls are scavangers so they go wherever the food is cheap and free. I don't think I've ever seen a McDonald's that's devoid of seagulls! But I'm glad they didn't pluck you up when you took the photo- they actually look quite pretty gliding around on the air like that if you don't know the rest of the story!!
@olivetreeann - ann, i was more concerned the thievers were going to use my head as their toilet. happened to me twice. then i hate it when people would say "oh, but that is suppose to bring you good luck!" hahaha! thank you, ann.
@olivetreeann - oh, ann, i guess welcome to the club? :-)) thanks, ann.
@cscecil - that was what i was thinking while i was taking aim at the birds! i'd really be pissed if they'd pooped on my camera/lens. i mean if they pooped on me, all i need do is go home and shower. if my camera, it'll cost me to have it cleaned!!! thanks, CS.
@sunnygreenwood - thanks, anne. actually there were more than 10 that's not in the shot. and the flock of geese is not included in the count. :-))
@espyetta - hell or heavens? you're really a teacher; you're giving me a fill in the blank quiz :-D oh, i know the answer: 'world'
you know, MB, i used to be teachers' pet when i was in high school. heaven only knew why because i was really talkative in class. hahahaha. thanks for your comment, MB. much appreciated.
hahaha....another great story to go with your photo! you know I love bird shots...so of course I like this (and as with teenagers I have a strange fondness for obnoxiousness in gulls). of course, as alia says, they are not very cooperative!
@patticake - the gulls were quite gliding against the wind so i had time to set up my shot, but by the time i've clicked the shutter, they're still too quick and some got out of the frame. thanks again, patti.

@saaski - thanks, yvonne.
