inspired by john piper's "a retrospect of churches"

last sunday, in our forays through the towns of western ontario, we came across an old corner building in downtown elmira, ontario, with its red bricks restored that caught my eye strictly for its clock tower. from half a block i took a photo and i noticed second tower with the same colour of bricks. it turned out the second tower belonged to an evangelical church about two blocks from this corner building. i thought it would make a great shot for the john piper artist challenge.

and then of course one of my boo-boo shots came in handy with the overlay process to produce the dark effects that is reminiscent of john piper's style.

i'm beginning to like processing the heck out of a crappy shot and turning it into an abstract.

thank you for your views and kind comments; much appreciated, folks. and i'm posting this on tomorrow's slot because i have to post at some point my "same camera setting" shot for the 10th, except i can't seem to set my camera to the setting i used last week.
love the processing.. very very very nice my friend!!

October 11th, 2012
I'm loving this one ALOT. A FAV. How did you do this and process it, summerfield?!!

@bkbinthecity - thank you, brian,

@karenann - thank you, KA. so kind of you. i overlayed the building photo from sunday on my boo-boo shot today (downtown buildings in daylight, misty rain but still a lot of light from the west, and it came out completely dark i could hardly make out the shapes of the buildings) then i auto fix it and became reddish shade; softened it twice, then parnography-ish effect that jumbled the image quite a bit. then HDR once, then added texture. there's another effect that i added that made it black-ish. what's the matter with me, i bought this little notebook right beside me so that i can write down things when i'm processing and i forget about it! :-) whew! that's tiring, isn't it?
October 11th, 2012
Yes .... VERY tiring! Especially for an idiot like me who only uses crop and clarity! LOL What app are you using, girlfriend? I hope nothing as complicated as photoshop or lightroom! I really want to try this sometime down the road. (When I get smarter, that is.) Thanks. And I hope that this gets to pp!!

@karenann - come on! don't take cheap shot at yourself. you are good. nothing wrong with knowing just a little bit. the oak tree grew from a small acorn, remember? no, not using photoshop, too expensive. i'd rather buy a lens or a second camera for the price of a photoshop. never used lightroom at all, i'm so afraid of all these programs, you know. thankfully, picnik reincarnated itself as 'ribbet' or else i won't be able to do this stuff. i had bought a neutral density filter that's adjustable that's why some of my shots from the last three days have nice colours. i'm liking it. i know i have a circular polarizing filter somewhere in my junkhouse and i want to use that, too. i sold two photographs last weekend, did you know? i'm saving my sales for a trip to manila next year. i'm starting to like this photography if it will generate some "play" money.
October 11th, 2012
NO!! I didn't know that you sold some photos. How wonderful is that?!!! Which ones were they and who bought them? Congratulations to you, my friend. That is the best news I've heard all day. I'm smiling. :) P.S. So happy that Picnic was your app ... I can handle that. I think. :)

@karenann - this shot: http://365project.org/summerfield/365/2012-09-20 and one of niagara falls that i never posted here, but similar to the one in may with the flying bird. i'm having them printed on a 'fabric' paper and matted, the buyer will get his own frame to compliment his interior decor.

Really cool work. Love the surreal aspect of this. Nice moody feel too - which I like.

@karenann @summerfield If you can't afford Photoshop try Gimp. A full featured open source application which you can download for free. It is a great application and pretty easy to use as well as having lots of additional software and plugins available.

Very nice processing! It's a wonderful feeling when someone likes one of your pictures enough to want to buy it, isn't it? :-)
October 11th, 2012
This looks very Dickensian classic shot
October 11th, 2012

Great abstract painting!
October 12th, 2012
This is amazing. I would never expect to like abstracts or really dark pictures but I love the feeling this gives me
October 13th, 2012
You are food at ETSOOI-ing the pic and turning into N artwork! Wow! Tis is Amazing. What did you use to,layer the shots?
October 14th, 2012
Fav! Love the way you processed this!
October 14th, 2012
Very nice, very Piper! I did try Gimp once but I found it a bit overwhelming and decided to stick with Ribbet, iPiccy and Picmonkey. But that was just me. There are a lot of people on here who really like it.
October 15th, 2012
well, if this had been selected as a finalist it would have had my vote. Of all the entries, I felt this one had the strongest john piper "feel". oh well.
October 16th, 2012
@jsw0109 - why, thank you, jeff, for that vote of confidence. but i just won three challenges ago and it's quite difficult to be choosing the top 5, never mind choosing the artist. i'm sure you know that as you've won a few challenges yourself. much appreciated, jeff.

This is so cool - I love the processing. I could totally see this blown up and hanging on a wall. FAV.
