I'm not a keen quilt maker by any means but sometimes I make little quilts for special occasions. This one's for our youngest granddaughter.
Where normally I'd only have a few different materials, there are about 50 different materials in this quilt --- two squares of each material. The idea is to pick one square then find it's match. We sometimes play a similar game called Concentration, with a deck of cards.
Our older granddaughter loves Concentration and had a hand in picking the materials for this quilt for her little sister. She's partial to Strawberry Shortcake. Poppa's partial to animals and whimsy. I'm partial to something with green in it to compliment the green in the baby's room and also, the borders in the quilt. So, with all that taken into consideration, this wild creation is the result. Thankfully the back is a beautiful off-white with a slight flowing pattern that's barely visible so at least it can be flipped over to rest tired eyes! There's still some quilting to do, basting stitches to remove, then it's done!
It's a beautiful quilt. I've never made one. Looks like a lot of work went into it. That is so cute about having two squares of the same material. Sounds like a fun game.
What a fabulous, creative colorful quilt. I'm sure it will be cherished for years to come. It's a very special gift. Great shot to showcase all of the colors and fabrics.
Anne this is gorgeous. I love the story and how this came to be. Riley will treasure this. My sister and I share a quilt from my grandmother. We trade it back on her birthday in June and Christmas.
Beautiful! Just a perfect pieced love for the grand daughter! I love the idea, I might ask if I could use your idea? My first grand daughter (J) i crocheted a heart afghan , then my other first grand daughter (S) i made a pieced heart quilt. Just this week , I was blessed with my other son's family, grand daughter (M) where I made a whole panel quilt - for the first time. Oh, My I am just babbling on - it's a grandma thing you know! LOL :-)
great gift, my mum is a quilter, and I finally got one she made for me. She made quilts for each of my nephews when the were born. I love the idea of the quilt also being a game
@kbuehl yes, of course you may use the idea. If you're interested I can use my other album to post a pic of it laying flat so you can count the squares, etc.
This is such a beautiful quilt, Anne! What a special gift. Your granddaughter is going to love it! You and my mother are such kindred spirits. She's currently making quilts for all three of my brother's kids.
I love the green border. And the idea of playing a game with the matching squares is a great idea. I did a similar quilt for my niece that was called "I Spy" pattern, so each square was different. I made laminated cards to go with it so they could pick a card and find the match. How much easier to have the match already on the quilt. But any game like that you can play makes the quilt that much more fun to have. Yours is beautiful.
