We were walking the back roads and came across this creek --- well, it used to be a creek. Now, thanks to the beavers, it's a small lake, with a creek running out of it. You can see the dam across the middle of the pic. This is the middle section of the dam. There's that much again on the sides that's out of the frame.
The water above the dam has flooded the field. The water below the dam is at the normal level, more than a meter [3 or 4 feet] lower. The tree growing out of the middle of the dam will die if the dam is not broken.
I waited for a few minutes but there was no sign of a beaver. Couldn't wait any longer as it was cutting into my walking time. ;-)
Many thanks for dropping by and taking the time to view and comment. I'm totally enjoying seeing everyone's Christmas pics, just having a bit of a problem keeping up!
I have seen these a few times and they are really amazing pieces of structure. Great catch of this and so beautiful in that area. Do you walk every day outside? Great photo ops then!
Damn great shot! LOL Sorry I just had to say that! In northern Ontario I seen lots of beaver dams...my Dad used to get paid to destroy them as they flooded the logging roads.
Awesome capture, Anne! The beaver has been really busy! I saw my first beaver this past summer. The last time we were at the Greenway, we saw a beaver dam that was huge! They are really amazing creatures. It's too bad they can be very destructive. too. I envy your snow! It's so pretty!
That's pretty wild! Beavers are very smart! They built their dam by the tree so they could eat it over the winter. Nothing like have food close to home. I like the feel of this, Anne, it makes me want to take a walk myself!
