I liked the look of this duck box hanging over the beaver-induced marshy pond. There were some mallards swimming off in the distance. Still no beavers making an appearance. We'll have to park ourselves there with some lawn chairs and a picnic lunch to get a chance of seeing who lives where.
Many, many thanks for all your support and kind words. Never ever thought I'd get a pic in the top 20!
Almost looks like an oil painting. Serene feeling to it. Funny you should mention the beavers. I was on the hilly banks of a small stream last week, and saw one floating in the current, making its way to the shore. Tried to catch up to it for a snap, but it was gone by the time I tripped my way down.
@lynnb thanks for all your kind words, lynn! if the box is actually being used it's probably mallards. we saw a pair swimming nearby but they didn't go into the box while we were there.
Lovely shot and composition. Contests on top 20, you certainly deserve it. I have never heard of a duck box either, how do they use it? That hole doesn't look big enough.
@jennywren thanks jen! i thought the hole seemed too small too and actually looked it up. the directions say to make them 4.5" x 3.5" oval hole and i guess that's about what this is. it's hard to tell from this pic but it was a pretty big box. i'd love to see some birds actually using it ... we'll see as the spring progresses.
wow! i just read an article on wood duck boxes and that was quite interesting and educational. i think it's a good idea to stalk that place and see to it that the ducks actually use it.
interesting, too, that there are still nothing green around this area. or maybe it is quite difficult for the new ones make its way through the thick dead ones. the textures though are quite interesting. they look like a tangled mess of blondish hair. wonderful shot, anne.
Fabulous shot and the swirly water ripples give it that extra touch! Never heard of a duck box and how neat to have beavers close by. Hope you'll be able to get a shot some day!
never knew ducks go into a box..
