Common Merganser by sunnygreenwood

Common Merganser

I was taking a pic of an inukshuk just off shore when this guy popped up right beside it. Here's an excerpt from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology site, if you're interested: "Young Common Mergansers leave their nest hole within a day or so of hatching. The flightless chicks leap from the nest entrance and tumble to the forest floor. The mother protects the chicks, but they catch all of their own food. They start by diving for aquatic insects and switch over to fish at about 12 days old."
Gorgeous merganser in black and white, love the water drops hanging from his beak!

Lovely shot and interesting looking bird. It seems to have a very big head and thick neck in proportion to the rest of it.

Lovely shot of this handsome duck, and interesting info too. The young ones certainly take on the world at a very early age.
