Barges on the Chesterfield Canal by susiemc

Barges on the Chesterfield Canal

Most of the barges were closed up for the winter but one or two were occupied. Perhaps they're warm and cosy inside, I don't know because I've never actually been inside one.

The Chesterfield Canal starts at West Stockwith on the River Trent and ends in Chesterfield. It was built between 1771 and 1777 as a link between the Trent and settlements including Worksop, Retford and Chesterfield. From the Trent, the goods producedby the industrial quarters of these towns and the quarries, brickyards and collieries nearby, had access to the world markets.

It's good to learn a bit about the history of different parts of the country, even on a cold winter's day.
Quite a cheerful looking picture for a cold winter day.
I’ve often thought it would be fun to take one of those vacations where you rent a barge and go barging around the canals of England but I never got around to doing it and,as time goes by, and I get older it’s seems less likely that it will ever happen. I’d prefer to do it in warmer weather though if I ever do get at it.

Such a lovely view along the canal. When my son was in the Uk specialising in phsychiatry he lived for some time metres away from a canal and when I visited I used to have a walk along this canal almost every day.

Barges always fascinate me too...we have lots of them on the Lancaster Canal some with fires smoking...they do look cosy but I’m afraid they move much too slowly for me! ....

Lovely splash of colour from the barges. I've been on day trips and they're a very peaceful way to travel. I always wanted to do a barge holiday but never got round to it. Are they creating a new path or upgrading an old one?
