The Holly tree already seems to be full of berries, these few were lagging behind.
An old wife once told me the more berries, the harsher the winter. I'm not entirely convinced this is true, but it will make a pretty Christmas scene. Ooops, did I really just mention that word
Nice shot. There might be some truth in the old wife's tale. I believe plants generally throw out more shoots/flowers/seeds when they are in distress (as a kind of survival mechanism). However, i can't imagine this particular plant has been that distressed yet, given the weather so far. Or is there another reason?
@peadar Perhaps it's me causing it Peter, the sight of me on a step ladder, camera in hand is just too much for it!. On the other hand, the tree has had a heavy prune near Christmas the last few years when the neighbour cuts it down for wreaths, maybe that has caused the distress.
So pretty. As you are getting closer to winter we are heading for summer. Our first year married we lived in Lincolnshire with the RAF and it was bleak. It snowed from November to April. I don't miss snow at all.
I think the word you mentioned should be banned until November at least. Although I do catch myself looking for what might look good on a card every now and then. Our holly bush never has berries, which is a shame.
@helenhall Sorry about the word mention Helen, it just slipped out. You may have a male holly bush or a female one that needs a male one to pollinate it. (I kid you not)
It's nice to see the new growth as a sign of renewed life. Well done on stepping up to the job. The "H" word is hard to take over here around February.
