It's been nearly 5 months since I got my new old camera and I have to admit some of the settings are still a mystery. I've not done any night time shots, and have no real clue what I'm doing.
I used auto setting on this shot and hoped for the best. The reflections turned out nicely but the sky was far too light and noisy to the point of shouting.
So this is where my cunning plan came in. I swapped the sky with a darker, less noisy shot and then gave it a painterly look in Topaz to hide the remaining noise
I think, possibly, I got away with it. I really don't mind if you tell me I haven't :)
Thank you for your comments, tips and advice, they are always very much appreciated
I think in auto mode the camera always try to make things "lagom" as not to dark nor to light. When I shoot and want it to be dark I use manual mode, try it if you haven't.
@ingajohansson Thank you Inga, I shall try get some practice in, now winter is here and short days, I am going to have to try understand the settings more:)
The reflections look nice. Personally I'd get out of auto mode, put my camera in either shutter or aperture priority mode, or, better still, manual mode, Then stick your camera on a tripod and then it doesn't matter about needing a long exposure. It's a fun way to shoot too, smooth they water out nicely šš
Looks great to me. If you hadn't said I wouldn't have known. Great reflections. I agree about the use of a tripod, but you don't always have one to hand!
Nice one Suzanne. Auto mode would have increased the ISO fairly high. this may be reason for the noise. A stand and manual mode is the way to go and may use the 2 second timer or on off camera trigger to help prevent movement.Happy experimenting :-))
since I know little to nothing about photography, I can only tell when I like a photo or not. I love this! the reflections are fantastic and it does remind me of a painting.
I do like the image. I wonder if you were able to use a tripod -- if you do, it tends to allow you sharper night images because you can use a longer exposure. In the end, it's what effect you want to have. This works as is.
The reflections have come out really well and it is not obvious that you have changed the background. You certainly did get away with it. I still think coming off auto, you will find more rewarding.
I like the effect you have with the light and the ripples. I find that Auto typically doesn't choose great settings in low light, but you have worked around it well.

Old truth ... the better you know the camera the less you have to correct in Ps.
