When your sailing days are over

I am fascinated by the various derelict boats that sit on the rivers and estuaries up and down the country. I wonder how they happen to be there. I assume that the owners have died or moved on and left them to crumble into dust.

I suppose that some of the boats that are little more than a few ribs sticking out of the mud, could have been there for a hundred years or more. At least the wooden ones do eventually crumble to nothing, some of the newer, less biodegradable plastic boats will probably sit there for a thousand years.
