When seagulls are born they have a full set of grey/brown plumage which helps to camouflage them against the rocks. Once they get to about a year old, their adult plumage starts coming through.
Sidney here, was most upset about how scruffy he looked in this transitional phase. I reassured him that he would eventually grow into a fine handsome young chap and all the lady gulls would be flocking to see him in a few months time.
