Harbour lights by tabbycat

Harbour lights

Just practising my night photography (which I suck royally at currently, but there will be plenty of practice over the next year)
These are some of the many boats in Victoria Harbour, Hobart, Tasmania.
beautiful reflection the water Tabitha! love the strong blues!

Wow. Love the reflections and lights. Beautiful shot! =D

Nope, sorry Tabs. If this is what you think 'sucking royally' is, you are gonna have to think again! This is just gorgeous! Truly gorgeous. (You want to see royal sucking night shots, I got plenty! - Not on here, though, I'm quite proud of the couple I got ok with.)

really like the tone of the light here.

What Jeni said......the reflections are just gorgeous. A fave for me.
February 7th, 2012
@fungirl @bobbyj Thank you both!! ..though I'll have to say Bobby, they look distinctly more like Geelong Cats blues rather than Carlton Blues ;-)

@jenirainbow Thank you Jeni. This was the best of a bad bunch! I took many shots of the lights from the beautiful old treasury building reflecting on the water, but after shooting with different shutter speeds and other settings, they were ALL awful, so I called it a night. Later, I realised I hadn't changed the ISO for night shooting. *sigh* so much to learn!!

The blues are gorgeous.

@tabbycat - it is tricky, this photography lark. I'm only just moving into using the manual settings on my camera, and I so often mess up! Then I come home and read the manual, and try again. It is so satisfying when get the hang of something I have been working on, and night shots are a case in point. Oh yes, still plenty of room for improvement, but definite progress has been made. Your shot really is lovely, keep going and they will all come out as good, or even better! :-)
February 7th, 2012
you did great! if you're on a tri-pod you can crank the aperture wide open and have a longer shutter speed. you can even get away with a lower iso. i find.
February 7th, 2012
Very nice!!!
February 7th, 2012
holy shit... fire!!
February 7th, 2012
@kiwi You know that's precisely what I did with the treasury building, but everything turned out at least somewhat blurry, even though there was nothing moving in the scene....?? I thought maybe my shutter speed was maybe too long?
February 7th, 2012
@twofunlabs Thanks Mike! Sorry i haven't been to your project in a while. I was a tad traumatised by that poor fish :(

@grecican Really?? Thank you, Ma'am! I hesitated even putting this up, but perhaps I am becoming too much of a perfectionist lately? Did you have a good time in Grunge-town even without your black pussy??
February 7th, 2012
@tabbycat i did i did... it was great seeing my brother. missed him so... and getting to finally meet Paula and Shades really was wonderful. such good folks, right there.

how you doin?!
February 7th, 2012
Excellent colors - great shot!
February 7th, 2012
@grecican Excellent!! I'm doing awesomely!! Exactly 7 days now till school starts! I can't believe how patient I've been these last two months! I'm currently tossing up if I want to visit Vancouver or Europe on my winter break in June??
February 7th, 2012
oooooooh. well this doesnt show royal suckage. nice reflection, fab job!!
February 7th, 2012
Very cool how the lights reflection on the water draws your eye to the boat in the distance. Love the deep rich color of the sea and sky too.
February 7th, 2012
Fav for me. You chose the perfect time of day to shoot this. I adore those deep blues and the lovely reflections. Very pleasant composition. And a crane.
February 7th, 2012
Beautiful!
I notice a very high ISO, Is this ISO not what you wanted, turned out great!
Looking forward to you starting Photog school :)
February 7th, 2012
@janmaki Wha?? Huh! How could I have not noticed a crane?? LOL!! I was too focussed on the possibility of the Lady Jane being out of focus?? Thank you for the fav!

@monika64 Yup, part of my problem and the exact reason I'm going to photog school, cause I'm a technical dunce. I shot this on Aperture setting so the camera chose the ISO....thanks!

Just loving the beautiful blue.
I find that I can get a blur just from pressing the button, so usually go for a self timer shutter release. Mind you, I don't have a proper tripod out here, just a gorillapod.
February 7th, 2012
@joannapayne Yep, I had that covered with a wireless remote thingy, but still blur.....

@johnnyfrs Many thanks J! I can't get over you being sexy now. LOL! I totally thought you were older :-O
February 7th, 2012

Thanks for the faves guys and girls! You dudes always surprise me because I thought this pic was slightly suckier than the church one, yet this has had more views and more faves. I won't listen to me ever again! LOL!
February 7th, 2012
that reflection on the right just goes on and on!! Fabulous! I love me a bit of rich deep blue :-) so, let's re-define the term "royally suck" in Tabby speak actually means pretty awesome!!
February 7th, 2012
@pwallis @bmnorthernlight LOL! Thanks girls! I'm always striving for perfection, but thankfully, I don't do it neurotically! There is so much photo-joy in me right now! :-)
