Staircase to the Sky by taffy

Staircase to the Sky

Stairwell in the college's building, taken from the lowest level and looking up four stories. I'd never noticed the skylight before (have been in the building over 10 years!). It's a combination entry for the structures theme and the EOTB3. This is a very seedy area of our college's building. I was standing next to 3 very large industrial size trash bins. The color flatters the area as mostly it is in need of new paint. When I showed this to others who work in the building, they did not recognize it. We wish we worked in a building this lovely!
Great stairwell Shot. The skylight at the top draws your eyes up the stairs.

Fabulous lines in this image. Great perspective and composition.

Lovely - not your average spiral staircase wither!
February 22nd, 2013
You've got a really good angle to this photo.

Cool shot!

I really like this kind of shot and like Paul I like that it is not a spiral but different angles all the way up. Fav'd.

This sort of image stands or falls by the framing: this one works very well indeed.

They say photographers see better -- or see more (or maybe they just look more). In any case, this is a wonderful example of seeing the beauty in a place you're in day in and day out. I love it.

Superb composition. Love how it looks asymmetrical. Perfectly framed.

@foxsparrow Thanks for the fav!

@arthurk @scarlettau @pflaume @tinac1 @kazlamont @automaticslim
Thanks for the comment on perspective/frame. I was surprised at how different it looked based on how I rotated when taking the shot from the same spot.

@steampowered @thirtysevenways @fueast I also liked the angles rather than circles and tried to make it asymmetrical as it is actually very square and unimaginative
@duffy4edu totally agree -- education buildings, in my experience, lack any pizzazz!

That is brilliant. I have always wanted to shoot a staircase like this Taffy. I would love to see it in B+W with some fun had in contrast. I love this so much!!! A big fav.
February 22nd, 2013
@seanoneill Wow -- thank you so much!! As I was reading I thought you were going to say you wished you could see the grunge / reality of the area (really scuzzy)! But, I like the idea of B&W and will tag you when I do it. I can use it for an early date in my extra album.

Great shot,cutting off the lines really makes it better.I like the colour and POV.

@topcat Many thanks Kevin, for the comment and the fav!

Beautiful. It pays to look up!

@serenebarb You are sooo right! I can't believe I'd only noticed the grunge on the floor and stairs and, for over 10 years, missed the beauty in the stairwell if only I'd looked up!

beautiful shot!

@lisay Thanks!

@seanoneill
Here's the B&W version of the staircase. What do you think? I'm inclined to the color...warmer looking. http://www.flickr.com/photos/taffyraphael/8499964634/in/photostream

That is a very different set of stairs from the Circular ones you see. AWESOME!!!!
February 23rd, 2013
This is fun, particulary because it is not round and not symetric.
February 23rd, 2013
Very cool, great PoV, and as others have said I really like the odd angles
February 23rd, 2013
Great pov and composition. Hate to disagree with you, but I much prefer the b&w version; it's stunning.
February 23rd, 2013
Absolutely lovely patterns and spirals - great job using a unique perspective!
February 23rd, 2013
Great pov on this, amazing what you see when you look through the lens that you hadn't noticed previously

@danielwsc Thanks! I want to get a more elaborate editing tool as I knew what I wanted to do with the b&w and couldn't do it -- making the lines of the planes formed by the walls/ceiling more distinct. All I could do was darken the contrast a bit. But I am going to keep working on it and appreciate your kind comment!

Very very cool. The contrast is great, the composition is perfect - love it!

@tuesdaygirl Many thanks!

Very nice. I love staircase photography! Isn't it amazing how you suddenly start seeing the world around you differently when photographing daily? None of my stairways turned out at all...great reminder to try it sometime soon and definitly a FAV.

@synke Thanks so much! This one really opened my eyes to how different the world can look!

No, really . . . this is NOT UIC. It's amazing that you found and captured beauty in this way! Fabulous composition, great perspective, and a true example of seeing our daily world through a new view!
