Today is the halfway mark for my 365 project! I debated -- post a mundane shot taken today or continue to work with the more exciting images from my visit to Niagara Falls. The Falls won out.
[NOTE: I totally forgot I'd taken a photo for the halfway mark today on the road between the Traverse City and Charlevoix airports. See challenge page if interested... http://365project.org/taffy/the-also-ran-ph/2013-06-30
This is Skylon Tower on the Canadian side, famous because it has rotating restaurant at the top that gives the diners a 360 degree view of the area over the course of their dinner. It towers above the river, the Falls, and the various hotels and other buildings. It changes colors ever few seconds. If you look at it as large as possible, you can see the external elevators -- they look like little tiny buttons on the side of the column (oops, just realized you can't see them on this shot!).
I chose this image because of the way the tower dominates, dwarfing the multistory hotel below. And, I liked the blue and purple the best (other choices -- green, red, gold).
Well done on getting halfway. It's all downhill from here. Lovely colours but I don't think I will be dining there if I ever visit due to my dislike of height but I can appreciate its beauty from the ground :)
Gorgeous color! Wonderful lights....Reminds me of the space needle in Seattle. Congrats on being half way through. I really enjoy your photography and look forward to seeing them.
Well done on halfway...I'm the same but didn't realise and posted a pretty mundane shot! This on the other hand is fab. I love the lights, and I think the hotel gives a perspective. Nice shot.
Well done for getting halfway!!! That's huge!
Great night shot, the blue/purple combination goes so well with the clouds around it (looks great large!)
Its a great structure and lighting in the shot. Can't help feeling it doesn't belong next to such a wonderful natural phenomena though. I was a bit surprised at how touristy the Canadian side of the falls was. Congrats on your half way mark!
Thank you all for the kind comments and the congrats on the half-way mark. I know many of you are in the same situation and it's been an exciting process to go through together.
Terri -- we were so lucky with weather as it had been raining continuously. The weather broke while we were there and then just got better over the course of the day.
Alison, I as surprised too -- when you look across, it's complete neon, including a ferris wheel that you can see sticking up from an amusement park. Then, at night, the Canadian side shines lights onto the falls, which makes night shots tricky because of the lighting. I suspect the US side will look like that in time as they build more hotels, etc to attract tourism.
Paul, it's a very impressive place!
Fabulous night shot and I like the colours too. Lots of us now at that 50% mark can we all push through to the end? I have really enjoyed your viewing your photos Taffy.
Congrats on getting half way Taffy. I enjoy your project, so I hope you are not half way to leaving!! This is a superb night shot. I am envious of your trip to Niagara.
@elaine55@seanoneill Thanks Elaine and Sean! Sean - the visit to Niagara was so much fun. I was lucky that I was staying with a former student who lives so close. And another former student teachers there as well, so the two of them played such great hosts to me by working it out for me to go there before and after my talk. I was VERY lucky!
This is beautifully captured. You rock the night shots!
