Caroline @carolinedreams, my get pushed partner, asked that I use intentional camera movement (ICM). I had decided to try something other than flowers, bugs, and beaver island scenes today to work on ICM for an abstract that would fit ONS5. My goal had been to photograph a bi-plane that has been buzzing our end of the beach. Coming back from that failed attempt, I noticed the sun high in the sky, looking like it was being shot out of our windsock ( http://365project.org/taffy/the-also-ran-ph/2013-07-11). After trying to capture that, I decided to try ICM using my 24-85 zoom looking straight into the sun. I don't know how this came out as it did, but I really thought it was interesting.
Processed in HDR with a simple one-image run, then imported to Color Efex and a few additional filters applied to heighten the bokeh and diminish a bit of the glare from the center. The outside ring is a total mystery to me! Maybe from clouds?
@morrisphotos@darylo Thanks Terri and Daryl. I appreciate your comments! I'm tagging it for CSC-19, but Paul and I can't enter it as it would mean picking our own photos for the finals! But I'm having fun doing the challenge along with everyone as I'm learning a lot about the setting.
Great abstract- it's fun when those unexpected things happen when you're taking the picture or processing the shot. Maybe the outer ring is the movement of your windsock, or it could be the movement of your lens. It doesn't really matter unless you want to repeat the effect some time! Well done!
Sun being shot out of a windsock!? That is an interesting description! Wow! I wondered where the ring came from too. I thought maybe you also zoomed in as you shot. But I guess not...HOW did you move the camera when you shot this? in a circle? Horiz? Verical?

THanks Daniel, MB, and Katie. I've been thinking about the ring and here's one possibility. MB and Katie, I created ICM by zooming. I think for this one I zoomed in a little bit after setting it at a shutter speed of 125 -- so long-ish, but not really long exposure. I'm wondering if the movement created that circle out of a few clouds that were surrounding the sun -- they are more visible in some of the photos of the windsock and sun when I was trying to get a flare in the photo. The other thought I had was if the lens hood edge was doing that, but if it were, I think it would have been black and not white. I'm guessing, the wispy clouds.
@olivetreeann Thanks Ann -- you're right in that surprise is part of the sun. For this shot, the windsock was in a different part of the scene and I was shooting above where it was. See note above -- the more I look at it, it has to be those wispy clouds. I don't think I'll repeat -- my eyes and already getting sore from all my attempts at flares this week! I feel like I had to do a bunch of different ones so I would better appreciate all the entries in choosing the top ones with Paul.
@ness50 Thanks Vanessa -- and so glad you have continued to stay past the end of year one. Wow, what an accomplishment!! @anazad511 Heehee -- that happens to me more than I want to admit! Thanks for returning and commenting. I'm glad the shot resonated! @welcometocarolworld Thanks Carol!
Wow a stunning abstract! Love everything about it! Beautiful flare and gorgeous bokeh! The ring will remain one of those mysteries never to be recreated! Lol! Fav !
