Walking home from a meeting in downtown Chicago's Loop gave me a chance to take a few photos in and around Union Station, a grand old building that is the not-used-much train station across from the 'new' station (probably decades old but a modern looking structure). The original has amazing columns, portico, and grand stairway. Learning how to combine photos (HDR) helps capture the elegance and the details. Another image is in my third album for those few favorites that I want to include - http://365project.org/taffy/special-photos/2013-10-18.
Thank you all so much for taking my NYC skyline shot to TT #1. It's still hard to believe. I admit that over the course of the day, I've had to check to make sure it still is there! I really appreciate the support I've had from all of you on the site. Jim's comment to me this morning: "Really? It had to be a New York shot and not Chicago?"
Great shot Taffy! The perspective is spot on and the person in the distance has a nice anchoring effect. Congratulations on the TT!! Tell Jim Chicago will make it there one day too, I'm sure of it.
Wonderful perspective!!!! Love the way my eye follows the lines to the opening. FaVulous composition and tones. That splash of color at the end makes the journey lovely!!
Love the perspective. Looks like it goes on forever. Love the view through the door also. So colorful. Fantastic lighting. The city of Chicago should hire you.

Thanks so much for the favs, Caz, Tony, Elke, Pam, and Carol. It really is a majestic building and your favs help me feel that I was able to capture some of that.
wonderful repeating lines and patterns on this... have to say, this is exactly the kind of thing i would want to convert to black and white... i think the detail of the doors and gent in the back get a little lost with the vibrant red of the pharmacy sign...
and congrats on your #1 TT shot - cool feeling, huh? and it was indeed a very awesome shot!
Just saw this on the TT> Fabulous...love the leading line, the textures and tones, the point of interest at the end of the arches, the repeating shapes. fav
I am really struggling to keep up with viewing and commenting, so sadly I missed this, but it is wonderful to see it on the TT, it is an amazing shot like so many of your shot, well done hugely deserved as always.
@thirtysevenways It always feels a bit (or more than a bit) arbitrary to me when I see so many amazing photos each week. But I do admit, it's so reinforcing -- I do feel good when I have one in that group. Thought the 'imposter syndrome' is always right behind my excitement.
@taffy not sure if you read Ross' article on the PP and TT but it was interesting and shows basically the more people you have following you the better chances of getting into the TT because you are likely to get more favs on average. There are some photos I look at and think that's a nice photo but nothing special and they have 20 favs just because they have 600 or 800 followers. Whereas some people have awesome photos and only get 5 or 10 favs so never get in the TT. I think it is therefore a combination of taking great photos that appeal to a wide audience and spending time commenting on others, and not everyone can do that. Sorry that was quite long winded. You should feel good about being in the TT, the three times I have been, but I also get the 'imposter syndrome' because there are lots of better photographers out there than me.
@thirtysevenways I did read Ross' explanation and you're right in that I also concluded that it wasn't necessarily the top 20 in quality, but in attention. The take away, I think, should be to 'just enjoy the moment' since these moments are relatively rare. Hard to do but easier for me to tell someone else to do it than do it myself!
@cazla I suspect this was taken with my 24-85 zoom that I bought when I got the D600. Also a great lens. I'm going to go through my files to see if I can find a few of the 85mm shots taken with the prime. The quality of the prime is sharper than you see in this image. It's about the sharpest lens I have. BTW, I also have the 105 macro and LOVE it. My most used lenses are: 50mm, 105mm, 70-300mm, and 24-85mm. I am not using my 85mm as much as a walkaround but use it almost exclusively for portrait and indoor shots that I want to have a tight focus on. The bokeh on the 85 is the best of all my lenses.
I have been busy, tired, and now sick so I am not getting on here much. I am feeling run down too, with trying to get photos which is what I want to be doing, and all I really do,is work all the time. But I was just browsing the TT and saw this again. I think I saw it on my phone before...seeing it better now...LOVE. And fav! Congrats on the TT
Thanks so much MaryBeth. I know how much you've had on your plate and appreciate the visit and kind words. At the moment I'm in a paid as my aperture system has crashed and I have lost my entire photo library. I've backed it up yesterday thank goodness but for some reason the restore function seems stuck. Agh! So disheartening. Am going to check on it again. Afraid to use my computer at the moment so it's just sitting there deciding if it wants to restore. So your kind comment came at just the right moment.
Huge congrats on the no 1 spot on the TT.
