Picking up parking stickers today was nice as the city was pretty empty, including City Hall. Unusually, there was only one person in front of me in line. I love the architecture of this old building. This is the street level hallway on the city side of the building (the county is the other half), using HDR from three bracketed images.

Beautiful, classic architecture, well shot! And, as the recipient of many of your parking stickers, thanks for doing this today! Great use of HDR here.
fav - this is wonderful! I like the way you have used HDR without overdoing. I have seen many shots on here that scream HDR - yours doesn't - but it's very rich - just lovely!
@michaelelliott Thanks Michael -- high praise from you! You know, though, that you would be the first to know if I were coming back to NYC. It was because of you that I had a #1 TT -- eternally grateful for that experience!
@cathieg The city was like it was closed today -- skeletal staff and the streets almost empty between the holiday and the snow. The weather was truly horrendous and I don't have a clue why I suddenly felt it so important to have the parking stickers!! But my reward was an almost empty building!
@jankoos Thanks Jan -- one thing I've learned in HDR is to lower the structure no matter what the preset suggests. High structure is what gives it that make-believe cast, I think.
@yaorenliu Thanks RL! The rules are varied -- in neighborhoods where the residents can't get a parking place, it often is zoned which means we buy an annual sticker so we can park on the street, and we buy booklets of 15 stickers that we can give to individuals who are visiting. It means in Chicago, it's common to call as you are pulling up to someone's place, they run down and give you a sticker, and then you go look for parking in their neighborhood. Crazy!
I love your photo because it's warm and beautiful and doesn't scream "HDR" at all! I'm reading your replies to people and I'll have to check out wat you mean by "lower structure"...obviously it works!
@Weezilou Thanks so much! In my HDR program (I use the one from Nik Suite), on the right side are sliders, one of which is for structure. If I slide it to the left, it reduces the structure details.
@taffy Thanks Taffy...I'll Google Nik Suite.
My daughter & family head back to Chicago Saturday...reluctantly, I think....what with the snow and the parking situation you mention! The upside is that you have a stunning city to photograph!
@Weezilou Next week it goes down below zero and there are a few days coming up at 9 - 12 below. I'm dreading it!! Your poor kids having to leave nice weather to return to this! If you look at Nik Suite -- I use, a lot, color efex, silver efex, HDR and for moon shots, the raw output detailer plug in. It's been worth every penny.
@panthora I've loved learning to use it! IT opens the door to very interesting shots -- especially where you are as you have outdoor things with different amounts of light from ground to sky. Those would be perfect for HDR.
I saw this on the Trending page and from the thumbnail I knew it was your shot! Such a distinctive style Taffy! Fabulous capture of a stunning building! I am trying to use hdr like you to minimise the obvious effect. After criticism of my last shot I have a long way to go. I must check out the structure slider! Fav of course!
Fantastic! And thanks for the mention about lowering the "structure" aspect of HDR processing. I've never liked most HDR shots because they don't feel "real" to me. The way you did this shot makes me feel like I'm right there--but there's no artificialness to the image. :-) Well done!
Finally got to the bottom of the long list...and now that I'm here-Fabulous Fav!
Great architectural shot of a classic building Taffy.!Thanks for sharing some of your process. I'd like to explore HDR in the coming year. From the little I know, it's basically a stacking process isn't it?
Perfectly hdr'd.... it is so easy to not know when to stop with the sliders sometimes! I use Photomatix and find myself drawn a little too much to the surreal/painterly edit! You have bought out the de tails beautifully, the tones are very pleasing and your composition is spot on! Fav.
@pamknowler I find with HDR I have to decide going in whether it's about 'fixing' a shot to make it look its best, or purposefully going over the top with it for the sheer joy and fun of it. Some won't like the latter at all, but it's all in what you are trying to accomplish, I think. Have fun with it!
@elaine55 Thanks Elaine!! Yours was the first message I saw when I logged in -- that's how I learned about the double TT. WOW!! What a great way to start the year, the weekend, etc.! Hope you are well and having a good start to the new year!
Thanks so much for visiting and commenting!
