The tall building in the center is the main building in the complex that until 9/11 was the site of the twin towers. It's quite emotional seeing this building, visible as we walk through the neighborhood where we are staying. Junko and I went to the site last night in hopes of night photography of the memorial -- only to find the entrance securely locked up for the night. I took this shot standing near the memorial to the hundreds of firefighters who lost their lives. We're hoping the weather clears enough to go to the visitor center on Saturday. So far, 9000 flights have been cancelled, including the ones bringing Jim and Bill here to meet us for a Valentine's Day weekend. And of course, we can't get out. Not what we'd had in mind when this trip was planned!
Thanks for your continued visits to my album and your wonderful comments on my NY postings. I really appreciate it!
Such a lovely photo. Well all your photos are always amazing... It is very sobering visiting there. I remember going up the twin towers in 1999. I remember going back and seeing what was left in 2003 and more recently visiting this same view on our honeymoon last year. Such different emotions on each visit. Heres hoping the weather improves for you.
Wonderful image Taffy even though it wasn't the one you planned. I visited NY many years ago and one of the highlights was to go the top of the World Trade Centre. I have a lovely photo of me with the city scape as the backdrop. In my sorting of my house that i am doing I found the photo again. So sad!
This is an amazing shot! Beautiful and emotional! The POV and lights are really superb! The storms just keep coming at you don't they. Hope you get to meet up with your sweethearts for Valentines Day!
Beautiful shot, even thou not the one you planned but I always love to see all the city lights. Sorry about the cancelled flights and not being able to be with your loved ones on Valentine´s day
Wow this is the first time I have seen the new World Trade Center. Still too emotional for me to watch scenes of that tragic day. Thanks for posting this one Taffy. Great shot. Hope your sweethearts make it for Valentines Day!
Great shot Taffy Fav! sorry to hear the guys can't get to you and you can't get out. I got out yest before storm and now lounging poolside in 80 deg sun. Seeing my city in blizzard conditions. Things should clear up tomorrow or next day.
Very beautiful scene and capture. Love your cityscapes!
The east coast is getting hammered over and over again this winter. Hope your hubbies make it for the weekend.
I haven't seen an image of this building yet so thank you for sharing your wonderful pic. We visited the sight several years ago and were so moved, especially by the displays in St Paul's Chapel, we walked around with tears streaming down our faces, like many other visitors that day. Sorry to hear you have had to change your Valentine weekend plans, how disappointing for you all.
Wonderful night time shot! I hope you get to go back to the WTC Memorial, being a New Yorker and losing friends that day, I avoided the site for years. I went with some camera friends a year and a half ago, and was glad I did. Very spiritual and important place. I'm sure you would get some great emotional shots.
fabulous shot Taffy... hope you're able to fly out soon... somehow my husband managed to GET there this afternoon... but now not sure if he'll be able to get back tomorrow!
@pamknowler So many powerful memories of the twin towers. Thanks for sharing yours with me. I was in Chicago then, and we were supposed to close on our house -- we had just moved back after 35 years away. And then they closed the city, evacuated all the building in the financial district, etc. When things sorted out a few days later, and we were able to move in, we spent almost an uninterrupted week glued to the radio as we unpacked. Seeing the site, I just can't even begin to imagine what it was like for those here.
@luvmynynix Thanks Laurie -- it's certainly a different side to NYC than I've seen before, but fun photographing puddles and reflections on the streets! We looked like drenched cats or something by the end of tonight.
@northy Oh no...I was able to get rebooked on Saturday early morning -- 7:40 flight on the last available seat for the day. I hope he doesn't run into trouble when he's ready to leave. It's sort of interesting being here in this kind of weather, if only the guys had made it in.
@hinkkd My trip's been cut short because all our plans for a weekend with hubbies flying in fell through, so I'm hoping to get there tomorrow even though my ticket was for Saturday. It's such an emotional space just being near the buildings. I'll be so disappointed if I can't see the memorial!
@jankoos They didn't make it, so I'm leaving early on Saturday to go home. But it's been an amazing experience to see NYC under such an array of circumstances. I hope you and your family are doing okay. You're still on my mind...
@michaelelliott Thanks Michael!! It was fun shooting a bit today, though we were totally drenched by the end of the day. We decided indoors made sense tonight so saw No Man's Land -- amazing. You are missing ankle-deep flooding around all the corners making crossing any of the streets quite a challenge! And the spray as cars / buses go by is quite impressive -- we've learned not to stand near the street for any reason after Junko @jyokota was massively sprayed by a bus! Unfortunately, my camera wasn't ready to catch it! Turns out our walk with you was a very special time with perfect conditions despite the cold!
That answered my question I just asked. What a bummer your Valentine's day trip was messed up like that. Darn weather. This photo is amazing. I can imagine it is sad to stand there...where the Twin Towers used to be. Are they building more of these towers there? It hought maybe four or five?
Well to me you made the most of the situation by shooting the buildings as you saw them from below. I had to laugh as I thought about NYC's boast as the "city that never sleeps". Apparently you found one spot that does! Sorry about your altered weekend. But I think safety first will allow you to try again!
You'll have to come back to NYC when the weather is nicer--it really is a wonderful place to visit. I'm sorry your guys missed their flight. Love the POV on this!

It seems we are all affected one way or another by the weather today.
