This is a view of the major focus of the memorial, the fountain that captures the idea of the unending tears for lives lost that fateful date. This image is an HDR from three shots to try to capture the lighting of the golden hour so that both memorial and city were lit. I wanted to convey the scope of the footprint of the twin towers and just how much this site sits in the midst of lower Manhattan's business and residential areas. In my extras b&w album is a very different and more closeup visual: http://365project.org/taffy/the-also-ran-ph/2014-02-14
For a different take from a similar spot, see Junko's photo in her main album - http://365project.org/jyokota/365/2014-02-14. We were both so moved by the site and it's been interesting for us to see each other's images as we weren't really talking about photography while we were there.
Taffy, I visited the memorial last year, and yes, it is very moving and I believe the memorial committee did a great job. You've captured this nicely! Fav!
Taffy, this is amazing! The lighting, reflections, POV, everything about it is stunning. Definite Fav! I'll be in NY in April and look forward to seeing this in person.
The golden hour capture is a perfect contrast to the "never-ending tears" . . . beautiful depiction of a tragic story, but with golden rays of future hope. FAV.
@jyokota@taffyR - it was great to meet up again and shoot together on your trip to NYC. Hope you both made it home safe. I'm still in Florida visiting my mom. Sunny and 80 degrees. My wife tells me NY got yet more snow last night. I guess that damn ground hog really did see his shadow.
Beautiful capture of the 9/11 Memorial. The lighting and HDR effect makes the shot. No matter how many times I've been here always get different looks and always same somber feeling. Still feels like yesterday that I was walking to work and saw the disaster happen. I really like both your close up intimate shots featuring the names on the parapets with roses. Must have been unique to see and feel all the lost love on Valentines Day there.
@mikegifford Thanks Mike. I was glad to have seen it while so much is still under construction. I wonder, once the buildings are up, and it is a beautiful site in and of itself, if it will feel less harsh somehow. So for me, seeing the area in transition (from a few years ago as a roped off area to last year as a full construction site to now) has been powerful.
@redy4et Any time of day will be amazing, but if you have a chance to be there late afternoon as the sun is going behind the surrounding buildings, to me, it emphasized transition. It is such a spiritual feeling place and I am not at all spiritual! Only a few places have brought out that feeling for me -- and very diverse ones (Mesa Verde in AZ, and Pagan in Burma, birthplace of Buddah). I can't convey the feeling I had while there.
@nanderson You are so supportive -- thank you so much for such a kind comment about my work overall, as well as this particular photo!! I appreciate it a great deal.
@michaelelliott I can't even begin to imagine the horror of that day in person. Just watching it on television was other-worldly and unreal. Seeing the memorial, walking by St Paul's and 'the fence' that had the posters, and then seeing the tower and memorial in the midst of all the construction was disorienting and moving at the same time.
On another note -- what a good time to have been away from the city!! I hope your mom is doing well and you've stocked up on rays of sun. Despite the weather and its major affect on our plans, it was a great NYC experience. I spent the afternoon in Central Park retracing some of our steps from October. What a different look!! Am choosing what to post today or tomorrow.
Fav, beautiful, must have brought it all home to you being there. A day none of us will ever forget, we all knew where we were and what we were doing on the day that changed so many lives.
Stunning composition, Taffy...my eye is immediately led through the waterfall pit to the very special "autumn coloured" buildings in the centre background...really gripping!
This is such a strong photo for all the obvious reasons, the lighting, the emotion and the fact, personally that our youngest son was there recently to.
The HDR works so well for this picture. It's beautiful, peaceful which is strange to say considering what happened here. It definitely evokes and emotion in me that I can't even describe. You did it justice. I've been there and it's just such a surreal place to stand.
I feel now like I've been there - what a wonderful shot to post. You did a remarkable job with the editing of it. The detail and lighting are breathtaking.
The colors are working wonderfully, especially the gold in the middle. I am planning to come into the city this weekend and try out this and other sites close up. It's been a long time and this area particularly has been cleaned up so carefully.
Hahaha you see you come to NYC and you get another #1 pic like last time. Congratulations!! Funny but I thought your other shot from BBP would be #1? But anyway awesome my friend and hopefully someday soon I'll make it to Chicago and you'll set me up for a #1 from there ... Though despite your hometown pride how's it going to top the Big Apple ;)
Fav! I have never seen this. I just did not keep up with the rebuildiing effort. That is just so sad...never-ending tears. A pit of fear and destruction. ;0( Great job photographing it. Congrats on TT!Numero uno
@michaelelliott Amazing!!! I can't wait for you to come here -- we'll have to do the lakefront walk during twilight once the fountain is turned on again -- and out to Navy Pier. We don't have your bridges which I admit, can't be beat, but you'll find a LOT to get you to number 1 from here, given you skills. This was really exciting -- it also feels a bit like a tribute to 9/11 as much as for my shot. What a moving place to have been able to be.
@taffy - Sounds great I look forward once weather better. And yes #1 for this shot is a special tribute to this special place. Have a great weekend! I'm going to try to shoot the George Washington Bridge.
I was convinced I had commented on this amazing and poignant image Taffy, my husband remembers me showing it to him! Huge congrats on being top of the TT two weeks in a row, fully deserved. Fav.
I'm so pleased to see this shot in the no.1 spot, it really is superb and as I said the other day your work really is excellent, I hope you have enough space on your wall to hang all these great images?!
Great perspective, perfect angle and light.

What an amazing amount of views!
Wow to all of you -- thank you so much for your congrats and kind words. I'm just flying at the moment, so excited to have the TT one two weeks in a row. I still can't quite believe it!! Many many thanks for your continuing support -- that's why this is happening!
