Taken a little later than the photo in my other album tonight ( http://365project.org/taffy/special-photos/2014-04-17), this time looking across lake Michigan from the steps of the Adler Planetarium toward the south end of the business district on the left to Navy Pier on the far right.
Thanks for your kind comments on the Post Office plaza -- for those who commented on why there were not people, it's on a busy street and most people enter through the parking garage beneath the building. Few people walk there.
I love the colors in this -- the golden glow and the interesting orange and blue hues in the sky. I'd straighten the horizon and try cropping some off of the bottom and right to bring your eye to the "meat" of the composition.
@falcon11 You've hit on the issue in this photo -- the horizon actually is straight, but the coastline is not at this point. So, to make the coastline look straight horizontal, the buildings will lean to the right. Interesting to me because what we are seeing is the confounding of horizon and shoreline. Thanks for the visit and the comment!
@riverlandphotos I wouldn't go to most of the areas alone at night when I take these shots. This was a meetup so there were about 25 photographers there, maybe more. Sometimes I go with a friend or two from 365. Sometimes Jim (husband) is patient and waits in the car -- but that isn't the best as I usually feel too rushed. It's a tradeoff, as tonight I would love to have photographed the moon over the lake since I missed it a few days ago, but it would mean going on my own...so I passed on it.
@rvwalker You have such a good eye. I tried it on my computer and liked your suggestion so just went into picmonkey and did the same thing here. What do you think?
@rvwalker Ah, I see what you are talking about with the shoreline. It's actually an angled shoreline -- if I move the shoreline too much more to even it out, the skyscrapers that are the tallest look like they are leaning to the right.
Wonderfully captured skyliine! Love the dark blue of the water and the nice blues in the sky. Great color details in those magically lit buildings. Just gorgeous, Taffy :)!
You have exactly the same issue here with a perceived "skew horizon" that I had in my first post of "Morning"...not skew at all, looking at the buildings, but a shoreline shot at an angle. Great picture, could also work as a pano crop.
Taffy, this is a fantastic nighttime cityscape! You're such a master of breathtaking big city shots! Fav! I was disappointed that I missed so many good photo ops in Manhattan this past week, mostly because of our tight time schedule and all the rushing around we did on subways and taxis. Oh will, there's always next time!
@ithinkithunk You'll have a wonderful time here -- for architecture things, check out the Chicago Architecture Foundation tours for GREAT photo ops of buildings like the Rookery.
