Standing with Buckingham Fountain behind me, the sun was setting right in the middle of the street between. I used my gorilla pod and put the camera on the plaza, and caught this bit of flare against the skyscrapers. The iconic Sears (Willis now) Tower is the one with the tall antennae.
Fun shot in extras album as a break from architecture: http://365project.org/taffy/the-also-ran-ph/2014-09-22
FAV! I love your caption because it truly reminds me of having been in the Utah canyons recently, and the urban comparison really works. You do such amazing range of photography within the city of Chicago!
Love this shot and just the right amount of light on the tall building on the buildings. Love the sun flare too. It really adds to the shot. Sorry I'm not commenting so much at the moment, family here so pretty busy with the grandchildren.
Great skyline and division between dark and light. Curious to know what it would look like with more of the flare's light source would have been included...
Love your Urban Sunset series. No skyscrapers out here in the far west burbs. In answer to a recent question you asked, my being out here in the burbs would explain why you don't recognize the places I photograph. ;)
@ericdibosco Thanks Eric -- I cropped where I did because going further left would have shown just how overblown the setting sun was. It was incredibly bright and even using HDR I couldn't take a shot without an awful and uninteresting glare. Still further left, the buildings are lower and not that interesting, so essentially the glare and the other buildings created a lack of any focal point.
So.. I am just getting time to view and comment on this shot, which I like very much. The silhouettes are very appealing, in their varied heights and shapes, against the mottled dusk sky. Your crop on the setting sun is perfect, especially as I read what your choices were.
Wonderful colour and silhouettes! How I hanker after the opportunity to photograph some tall buildings, they don't have to be skyscrapers just taller than 4 or 5 stories!
