Day 3 in our temporary condo and things are slowly starting into a rhythm that is going to be our new normal, with more good than not-so-good. With the holidays and a conference coming up, hoping that the too-busy rhythms feel like they have a normal source, not the fire source. This image is an HDR, combined from three photos looking north from our living room. We overlook the main thoroughfare that cuts through Chicago: I-94 aka the Kennedy Expressway and over the day see the ebb and flow of morning through evening rush hour. We see the blue and golden hours of the morning and evening. It's mesmerizing. The iconic Hancock Building is in the square of reflection on the right, Lake Michigan viewed way in the distance, the flat western warehouse and residential areas to the west.
Fire Saga
Good things:
1. My new camera body that arrived last week is now out, lens attached, and this is its inaugural shot! No more oil on the sensor problems. VERY good.
2. Demolishing is moving along and some areas are now down to the studs, and the house looks clean -- though smells totally like smoke. Interesting, but a bit unnerving, to see the new contractor workers in their white suits and masks.
3. Received an email today from new contractor asking for cleaning company's contact since they rescued two area rugs and have been storing them to dry out. They may now be able to be restored.
4. That there is nothing else to report is a really good thing.
Not-so-good things (note the trivial nature of #1 -- that means it actually is a good sign)
1. Dishwasher doesn't work and I had to wash all the dishes in it by hand. In desperate need of manicure.
2. Quote from Jim re my continued obsession about Big Danbo: "I think you need to realize that Danbo is gone." Penguin, Little Danbo, and I are now mourning his departure and hope he is happy wherever he has ended up.
This view looks like a completely fabulous place to do some timelapse photography sounds like the lighting will be awesome. So pleased progress is being made on your house :) As for big Danbo, I am sure wherever he has ended up, he will be loved and looked after, otherwise he wouldn't have vanished.
@taffy now I see the others! Heather looked out at the building that changed colors on the circular top, left to Hancock in your photo. So happy for you that you're going to enjoy a "mini-vacation" in that beautiful location!
Gorgeous cityscape! Wonderful light and shadows. I can actually see the lake below that beautiful blue sky. Now about those me contractors in their white suits. Did you get pictures of them yet!
Stunning view, beautifully shot and processed. I am looking forward to seeing the seasons change through your new vantage point. I can see silver linings in those clouds.
Enjoyed reading your commentary and the very well written comments above. This is a beautiful cityscape - colors and wonderful. I can only imagine what that 360 degree view must be like in person. Glad you've had time to take a breath and a gentle sigh and enjoy what it is.
What a view! The photography opportunities are endless and who better to take advantage of them! Less not so good things so it's all much more positive Taffy! Take care! Have you had all the snow that's been on the news? Keep warm!
@pamknowler Thanks Pam. It really is amazing to see all the different looks across the day. We've been so lucky to avoid the snow -- it's moved just north of us.
Soo good to see you back into the groove Taffy. This is a wonderful shot which shows the patterns of this part of the city very well. What a great pov!! Fav
Great shot and very interesting view; excellent HDR treatment - I would not have guessed for one moment that you have used bracketing. Wonderful to hear that things are coming together, and I'm so glad for your new camera body.
This is fabulous Taffy. My grand daughter is not long back from a great break in New York. They've started to save for their next American trip, to Chicago. Their efforts have redoubled after I shared with them some of the great shots of the city by great 365ers.
Your lofty residence has given you a super POV on the city landscape and the daily changes it grows through throughout the day. I can't stop thinking and wondering about your Big Danbo. I've imagined a full-page ad in the Tribune asking for help in bringing him home to you.
Cool HDR shot. Perfect that you used your new camera in your new home to capture. Sounds like things are moving along. I've been thinking about you guys, and having to do dishes by hand stinks! :) I hate doing dishes even with a dishwasher. Seriously, your resilience is amazing. Happy Friday!
I hope someone picked up Big Danbo and has given him a new home :)
What a beautiful view you have, it must be nice to look out there each night and each morning and savour the view that is yours for a short period. Congrats on the new body ;-)
What fantastic view from your temporary accommodation. Sad to hear about Big Danbo, but I think you need to read the children's book The Velveteen Rabbit by Margery Williams and then you will know where Danbo has gone.
Beautiful view of the city! What a fantastic vantage point from your own living room! I know the circumstances that got you there haven't been pleasant but it sounds as though there's progress in the renovation and you have a great living space in the meantime. Enjoy your new POV!
hehe glad to hear today was such a good day, with even the negatives made me smile ;) this is such a beautiful shot! amazing view you have from the temporary condo, enjoy it!
@bill_fe Our straight north view picks up the lake where it curves in along Lake Shore Drive. Our east view looking down Washington takes us to the Lake where you'd expect to see it. So due north is the light colored K2 rental building. Behind that is more land. But to the east as you look north, you can see the lakeshore.
Whoa that's some view Taffy, you are going to have fun photographing that without having to make an effort to go out to get it. Its a fab POV of your city. Glad to hear you are settling in and things are moving along.
So sad about Danbo. Super capture of the city though, this vantage point is just an amazing view of the city. It's so colorful with the various building colors and splotches of grass.
Wonderful aerial view... I am glad things are settling down, and that you have this beautiful scenery to occupy you and provide you with plenty of photo opportunities without leaving your living room! Never knew Danbo....so sorry he is gone....:-(
What a beautiful view you have, it must be nice to look out there each night and each morning and savour the view that is yours for a short period. Congrats on the new body ;-)
Awesome shot. FAV.
