Taken at our friends who have raised this turtle from teeny-tiny to his about 7" diameter. This turtle gets to go out in their yard in nice weather and hang out with their dogs - all in harmony. There used to be a rabbit in the mix, who lived to a ripe old age. For those who followed me this summer, this is the family with the Bernese Mountain Dog and Golden Retriever who visit us on Beaver Island each summer.
Thank you for your thoughtful comments on the b&w street scene of the homeless in Chicago. It was hard to post...not the best side of our city.
@amandal And I had to do it through the aquarium glass with my point and shoot which was all I had with me. That's why the closeup -- weird lighting on the rest of it.
Reading your comment about "through the glass with your point and shoot" makes me think of the shots I took a bit ago of turtles in a pet store. Indeed not easy to catch them and not get reflections of all the store lights etc. Looking closer at your shot above and not being too technically astute, do you know what the reason is that the shell looks so crisp and clear, but there is so much noise on the turtle's underside? Is it because there's more light falling on the shell?
@mcsiegle There was a strong light that was hitting its back and causing the water beneath to over expose the rock he was sitting on. And he was partly below the water line. So, that combined caused the part underneath to be grainy and over-exposed. I cut as much as I could but still tried to keep his eyes on one of the lines of thirds. I probably spent more time on it than it was worth, but felt like I hadn't taken/posted a current shot in several days so decided use the turtle.
@mtnrunner This is actually a very friendly and social turtle. He was in better lighting when I took my camera out but as I got closer, he came over to greet me and thus got into much less favorable lighting.
I like your friends! For many years we had 4 large desert tortoises and (as will happen) umpteen rabbits (VERY long story...it wasn't meant to be that way!) It was such fun to look out and see them all together. This little red-eared slider is lovely, and it's a joy to raise the little turtles and tortoises to adulthood!
What a grand turtle. Do you follow Anita @aglennc? They have 2 huge large turtles that are like a million years old ( a slight exaggeration..hahah)
Beautiful detail and lighting.
Well, if you could tell whether or not a turtle was happy by the smile on its face, I'd say this shot is pretty close to being able to say that! Glad he ended up in such capable hands. Good shot!
