Truly not an inspiring shot, but there's something about the lines in this that appealed to me. Taken at the back entrance to the Art and Architecture College building on UIC campus. Off an alley. Not at all an interesting area.
Very good day today. One of my students passed her dissertation defense with flying colors and has a job to look forward to. A newly minted Ph.D. A rare and exciting event. Five more to go before I'm truly retired with my current students finished.
I've just posted steps too! I like the angles and play of light on the steps.
Congrats to your student and to you. As a newbie to supervision of PhD students, I understand the amount of work and thought that goes into the supervision, as well as the many hours of reading!
@dibzgreasley Many thanks! I wish you a career filled with these experiences. As hard as they are to supervise and support and as long as they take, there's nothing I've found that is more rewarding than the moment I can call my student back in and say "congratulations, Dr. xx" -- it's awesome. And then the hooding ceremony...the icing on the cake! It's fun to think that you are starting this work -- I've loved my career!
@taffy I look forward to the day I can do that with my current students! Sadly, I don't think my career will be too long as I left doing my doctorate a little late but I will do what I can with my time before retirement.
This is a lovely image Taffy, and I love all those lines and the determined gait of the pedestrian. Congratulations to both you and your student! Sounds like a wonderful achievement.
May be common to some but you've allowed the steps to show great texture and character. The shadows have just enough detail to make me want to explore. A fav just for using the average and making it interesting to look at.
Alway fantastic to see one's postgrads take wing and fly on their own. Well done supervisor. I like the simplicity of this shot, especially in B&W which shows up the patterns, light and shade so well.

Great black and white contrasts.
