I had a 2 hour walk along the north coast of the island with a good friend who is here from Arizona. The lake was fairly empty of activity for most of the time, until off in the distance we saw this lone sailboat, keeping a steady clip in the winds.
I love your choice of b and w, the rays, the sense of peace and solitude. I have mixed feelings re the balance of the three layers. I thin there is maybe too much cloud...it seems (though not in actuality) to be half the vertical dimension and it seems a bit stagnant to my eye. Since I love everything else about the shot, I find myslef wishing you'd tweak it a bit
@jgpittenger I won't have time til tomorrow, but what about a pano crop? Or is it the darkness of the clouds? Trying to sort out where to start as I also quite like this and would improve it if I could think of a way without losing the proportion too much. Thanks!
@taffy It's less the darkness of the clouds than the vertical real estate...I think a pano like crop would improve it. Maybe to just on top of the dark cloud on right side?
Just as a personal opinion - I like the large bank of contrasting clouds. They were the first thing I saw - then when you notice the tiny boat you feel so threatened for it. Would a crop cause you to lose some of that threat?
@taffy Thanks Taffy. I flicked between both of them. Both great but to my totally untutored eye I still preferred the first one. Loosing the explosion of light at the top of the clouds seems to have changed the whole scenario. It is instantly more brooding. The original seemed to lead you through a series of emotions - wow look at those clouds - boy they are mean at the bottom - follow the rays down - that tiny boat at full sail! - against that dark sea, As I said - totally amateur - and I love both. Cheers Rob
I really like this one. I spent sometime flicking from one to the other and i prefer the clouds in this one. For some reason the clouds appear squashed to me in the one you posted on Flickr.

@robz Hi Rob -- here's the revision, just if you're curious.
