New and Different Photos Ahead! by taffy

New and Different Photos Ahead!

In anticipation of a safari we're going on in February, I started looking into renting a long telephoto. I found out it is cheaper to buy this (and then possibly sell it) than rent a lens for the amount of time we are there, then decided if I'm buying it, it's better to do so early so I can practice. So, it arrived today! It is heavier than I'd use for a walk-about, but it is feasible to use it handheld. Better clearly with a tripod (I assume that requires the animals to stand perfectly still, though!). Very excited to start learning to use it.
Thank you for all the comments and favs on the sunset posted last night!
I will be really interested to see how you go with this. I'm very envious of you regarding a safari. On my bucket list.

@moonmtn Tanzania! I'm SO excited!
September 2nd, 2017
OMG, what a humungous lens, must weight a ton. Look forward to seeing some shots from there.
September 2nd, 2017
I look forward to seeing your pics from this lens and your to hear your thoughts about it. It's the sort of lens that I would love to have in a game park.
September 2nd, 2017
Maybe a monopod would work. Enjoy your new lens.
September 2nd, 2017
Oh boy oh boy oh boy! I am looking forward to seeing what you produce with this little baby! :-)
September 2nd, 2017
How exciting.... What an adventure to look forward to. I'm very envious, but looking forward to your shots

That is quite some weight to carry around, it should deliver fabulous images. Where are you off to?
September 2nd, 2017
This will be perfect for your safari Taffy! I saw Sarah's @piximac safari photos yesterday and they were stunning! The animals were so close! She was using 500mm lens which I would not be able to carry round as she does. Happy shooting! I look forward to seeing your shots!
September 2nd, 2017
By the way Sarah took her tripod and never used it. All her shots were hand held.

I have the first generation Tamron 150-600mm and am quite happy with it, the G2 has some features that I'm missing on my older version (better weather sealing, flex zoom lock) and is reportedly sharper at the longer end. It's been on safari with me to Tanzania and on my latest trip this summer to Southern Africa. I would recommend you to bring a large size bean bag with you on safari (empty, buy some rice when you get there). For walking around I use a sling style camera strap like this: http://www.blackrapid.com/all/camerastraps When I use the lens in a zoo I always have it on a sturdy monopod. Have a lot of fun with it, looking forward to your images

Love my lens and just back from Africa with it. I know @pixiemac loves hers although she does use a monster 500mm. Talk about little and large. If you can fine tune it to the camera , made a world of difference for Sarah although mine has been fine.

@padlock @taffy I loved and adored the Tamron G2 on holiday, took SO many photos with it that I'm thrilled with. All hand held or resting on a bean bag. Clive's 100% right, calibrate it to your camera, it sharpened mine a little more. And yes, as Pam says, my tripod travelled thousands of miles and wasn't used, not even for the very kindly loaned 500mm, that was rested on a bean bag .... or when desperate hand held, which must have looked ridiculous frankly as it's as big as me!😂
September 2nd, 2017
@salza Sally, without question, it is absolutely awesome!
September 2nd, 2017
Would love one of these for wildlife and aviation photography some what out of my price range currently so I'm rather envious. Will be interesting to see your safari shots :)
September 2nd, 2017

September 2nd, 2017
Thats quite a lens enjoy your safari looking forward to seeing your shots
September 2nd, 2017
Ooooh, can't wait to see your safari shots! Have fun learning
September 2nd, 2017
@padlock no worries I don't think I could find the cash currently anyway :)
September 2nd, 2017
Oh my, you are going to have such fun! We recently bought a Sigma 150-500mm for our wildlife photography and we love it. It is a bit heavy, but a tripod/bean bag for the edge of the vehicle help.
Happy learning! Can't wait to see your photos!
September 2nd, 2017
Wow, that is really big (and heavy, I suppose). Looking forward to see shots taken with this beauty.
September 2nd, 2017
Have fun :)
September 2nd, 2017
Fun times ahead :)
September 2nd, 2017
Ooh...drooling!
September 2nd, 2017
It really is a beast of a lens. David has a 500 mm and rather than carry a tripod around he usually manages with a monopod.
September 2nd, 2017
I looked into one of these once. I'm anxious to see your safari pictures! How exciting!
September 2nd, 2017
Ooh excitement! I love Tamron lenses, so bright and clear. Have fun with it.
September 2nd, 2017
looks like a great lens, looking forward to the photos you take with it
September 2nd, 2017
Wow, that is great. I can't wait to see the pictures.
September 2nd, 2017
Wow... it's a beast but I bet it will work well. Try a monopod. It will be more flexible than a tripod and help reduce the weight a bit.
September 2nd, 2017
Great teaser for your upcoming safari photo shoot :)
September 2nd, 2017
thanks for sharing!
September 2nd, 2017
Hooray for you! I definitely look forward to see your shots. Sure wish I were strong enough to hand hold such a heavy lens!
September 2nd, 2017
That looks very exciting and glad your logic kicked in and you get to enjoy it early!!
September 2nd, 2017
Wow
September 2nd, 2017
Very nice. Have fun
September 2nd, 2017
very nice!
September 2nd, 2017
Whoa, that looks serious. Exciting to see the results, have fun
September 2nd, 2017
I've got round the bulk and weight by buying a 300mm prime lens and using a 2x teleconverter and I am loving it
September 2nd, 2017
@leonbuys83 Thanks for the tips, Leon! VERY helpful!
September 2nd, 2017
So exciting can't wait to see what you do with this lens!
September 2nd, 2017
You might even want to keep it!
September 2nd, 2017
No window peeping.
September 2nd, 2017
So...looking forward to seeing and hearing about your safari adventures!
September 2nd, 2017
kay

September 2nd, 2017
@padlock @pixiemac
Glad to know that the two of you both found the lens worked well. I took it out today and was happy with the few images I took today. Hoping to get more practice!
September 3rd, 2017
Better photos and building the biceps all at once!
September 3rd, 2017
Impressive piece of hardware. Good luck on the planned safari, may you capture all those elusive animals.
September 3rd, 2017
you will get some amazing shots with this bazooka lens. Try it out at the zoo attached to a monopod.
September 3rd, 2017
@lesip Good idea for when I return to Chicago. I figured it would be good practice to be in the 'wild' on the island, and then do some stable work with a monopod or tripod at the zoo or along the lake once back home. I know I need a LOT of practice with this. And some upper body strength training!
September 3rd, 2017
Always fun to have a new toy, and you'll find it so useful on safari.
September 4th, 2017
Wow! Have an amazing time. I'm sure you'll get some incredible shots xx
September 4th, 2017
All sounds very exciting.

I've read some about this lens, its supposed to be good! If you get a chance get the 2.0 teleconverter made specifically for this lens as well. https://www.amazon.com/Tamron-TC-X20-Teleconverter-150-600mm-Ultra-Telephoto/dp/B01LQADTB4/ref=sr_1_2?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1504705773&sr=1-2&keywords=tamron+150-600+g2+teleconverter
September 6th, 2017
@mikegifford Thanks for the lead, Mike. I'll look into it.
September 6th, 2017
@mikegifford I was looking at getting this lens and teleconverter too, so let me know your thoughts and feedback. Right now I'm waiting on picking up my Nikon D850 which is supposed to arrive by Friday of this week.
September 6th, 2017
This lens wil serve you well in Africa. The bean bag idea is a good one. I found the tripod I took to South Africa was useless for wildlife shots because you'll be shooting from a vehicle for most of the safari. I'll bet you're excited!
September 9th, 2017
@redy4et Thanks Elizabeth! I'm so glad you and others mentioned the lack of need for a tripod -- takes up so much space and weight that it would have been frustrating to have carried it and then not used it! I'm quite excited about the upcoming trip and have had fun practicing with this lens.
September 9th, 2017
WOW.
