Ready to Ride?

Navy Pier has had a major make-over which we had the chance to see with visiting friends tonight. Trying out Jim's new Lumix bridge DSLR to get a feel for it (to help him out if needed and to see if I'd be happy using it when I don't feel like carrying all my gear).
Fabulous colours and angle.

Great image viewed on black. I hope Jim's happy with his new camera. The result looks good to me! I keep a wee camera at hand for when I don't feel like lugging the big guns, but also when I can't because of security restrictions. I never find it a very satisfying experience, but it's very useful though.

A great image. Hubby and I both have Lumix Bridge cameras, an FZ1000 and an FZ 200 both giving very pleasing results. We decided DSLR kit was too heavy to cart around Australia and these work really well. I hope your husband enjoys his.

@365karly1 @pamknowler
I bought (for Jim) the same one Pam has -- the Lumix FZ330 which is the same as the European/British FZ300. It's okay -- I like it better than the little point and shoots as it feels better in my hand, shoots RAW, and has S, A, and M settings. I was able to figure out the focus so I could control the focal point and that helped, and it goes from 25-600mm which is great. It isn't as satisfying to use as my Nikon full frame, but I wouldn't expect it to be. So not a substitute, but useful if that is too heavy for the occasion. And, while it isn't small, I can fit it in a fairly normal sized purse for evenings out or all day walking.

Wonderful shot! I'm interested in the camera you have bought - is it the next step up from a "point and shoot" Would it still be too big for a large pocket?
December 26th, 2017
@robz Here's a link to it: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?A=details&O=&Q=&ap=y&c3api=1876%2C%7Bcreative%7D%2C%7Bkeyword%7D&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIqdabsrup2AIVxLrACh2QDg1_EAQYAiABEgLOOfD_BwE&is=REG&m=Y&sku=1162645
It's too big for a pocket, but smaller than a regular DSLR. It isn't one that has changeable lenses, but with the 25-600 range, it has quite a bit of flexibility. It's a step up from a point and shoot, definitely, but not workable if you're looking for the "carry around in your pocket" type. I haven't found one of those that I like in the price range I'm willing to spend (Fuji makes them, with changeable lenses, but they are far more expensive...same with Sony and I think Olympus).

@taffy Thanks for all the info Taffy - I'll check out the one you bought - but I don't think it will suit - I really want one to still fit in my pocket. Maybe if any of the Fuji, Sony or Olympus ones that you mentioned look OK I might have to save up!! Or just keep playing with what I've got. Thanks again - much appreciated.

@robz Check with @ukandie1 as she has two small cameras that I think look fantastic and you can see how good the results are. They are small and might fit what you are looking for.
December 27th, 2017
@taffy Will do - thanks again!

@robz I have 2 Fujis, my x70 is definitely pocketable, but it is not a camera for everyone, it has no view finder and has a fixed 18.5mm F2.8 lens. I bought it primarily for street photography, I love this camera and it is my go to take everywhere camera, that said it is not for everything and because of that I bought the XT2 (which is interchangable lens), whilst it is smaller than most dslr's it is not pocketable. If you are looking at Fujis I suggest the X-E line, the new x-e3 is quite pricey, but the older x-e2s is still a fantastic camera. I also suggest you check out Olympus, I have seen some stunning shots from their cameras. What ever way you decide to go I would strongly suggest you try the camera out first and see if it is for you, because what one person loves another hates.

Love your composition on this! Navy Pier needs to be on our photo walk list, I took this shot from the parking garage and have not been back since, as it was a bit creepy up there on my own https://365project.org/ukandie1/365/2015-09-22

Cool shot!
December 27th, 2017
@ukandie1 It's very kind of you to bother giving me all these details! From what you have said it appears that neither of yours would suit what I want. I am pretty much just an amateur, hobby photographer and I really still want something easy to carry in a pocket. I'll have a look at the Fuji X-E and the Olympus and try to figure out what they can do that my existing one cannot. That would give me an idea as to whether or not it is worth the outlay. Many thanks again for your time and advice - I really appreciate it! Cheers Rob Z

@robz always happy to help if I can, often the camera we have is a lot more capable than we think it is, and new gear does not always mean better photos! I stuck with my entry level Canon Rebel for a long time before I upgraded, and I think I learned more from figuring out everything that that camera was capable of than if I had upgraded as soon as I started to look at better cameras than it was.
December 27th, 2017
@ukandie1 I had to laugh - I think you are spot on - my existing camera is probably better than I am! I'll keep your words in mind and just have a bit of a random browse while I keep playing with what I've got. :)

Wow, you got a great shot with his Lumix. There must be more than one version of this camera as I am not sure we could get this kind of photo with my husbands Lumix that used to be mine. FAV
