Annually, for St Patrick's Day, Chicago's plumber's union puts a (non-toxic we're told) orange powder into the Chicago River, which turns it a very bright green (no saturation increases used). Crowds line both sides of the river, many in costume. A few hours later, there's a parade. @ukandie1 Andie and I managed to find each other among the crowd which always makes photographing more fun. The only downside is having to get up early on a Saturday morning.
And here's Andie's 'big picture' scene: https://365project.org/ukandie1/365/2018-03-17
Great capture. I remember seeing this on a social media site a few years ago. It amazed me that the image was real and not photoshopped I can't imagine it being allowed in the UK!
@bella_ss Color will be there through tomorrow and then gradually fades away. It's the same every year, but I hadn't gone in about 4 years so it was fun to watch the hoopla. I know re the Follow issue -- I'd unfollowed you and didn't notice til I saw your Follow. Weird.
I was hoping you would show us the green river. Such an amazing sight!! One year I will come over and see it for myself!! You sure know how to celebrate in Chicago!! Fav!
I've just seen this on the news here, even saw this very boat. We had a high view point and it was very impressive, the whole river was bright green amongst the mostly grey buildings.
How wonderful to see the action happening. Wish someone here would do something similar. I've never seen bright green water like this. Great reportage shot.
Sounds like everyone has loads of fun. Must be quite a sight seeing the water that brilliant green. Makes me wonder if it's luminous and hence still visible at night.
@888rachel It was intense! And I had to laugh as we watched them turning it green. It just made me think of how hard it's been to clean up the river -- and then instantly it looked quite disgusting! But it was fun...
I wondered how they do that. Does the colour last very long? It really is quite bright. Would have been fun to watch.
