I spent a few hours at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo this afternoon, getting in some practice with my Tamron 150-to 600mm lens. I'm still quite pleased with it and hope we can reschedule our safari sometime this coming year. In the meantime, even with mixed feelings about zoos, I was touched by the way these two different species seemed to be trying to create a meaningful connection:
Kids: He's so cool and fierce!
Lion: Mmmm...lunch or dinner?
There was a pretty serious glass partition in reality.
This is great with the boys in the shot. I have a Sigma 150-500 that I've loved and use it often. Always fun to have a new tool in you box of magic tricks.
Marvelous! I spent the day (2 days, actually!) at the San Diego zoo, and I think zoos this good are essential to helping continue to keep animals from extinction! I was shocked when I found that even lions are endangered! Photographing people and their expressions as they are close to the animals is such fun! I got some too, but this was definitely post-worthy!
very interesting contrast. Like you I have mixed feelings about zoos- when that lion looks through that glass - is there that sense of confirmation of captivity.
Awesome shot! I also have mixed feelings, but when you see the expression of wonder and awe on the kids face, it's obvious that this zoo is fulfilling its mandate. I love introducing kids to the wonders of the natural world.
They both look so seriously towards each other... what a delightful POV to tell the story. I'm hoping that you can reschedule that well-deserved safari, too!
the photo is lovely
i am thinking similar to you these days but i do think that not every one can travel to far away places so if they are well cared for and rehibliating a zoo can be ok for some animals.
looks like you are on the wrong side of the glass. The connection here is priceless. I just love those expressions on the boys faces. I also love the texture you have captured of the lion's mane. And the light on his nose. Super capture.
I'm not a fan of zoos apart from species preservation functions, but I do like this shot. The expressions on the kids' faces are priceless, not to mention the lion.
What a fab shot of the two species! Love it! I'm with you - I have very mixed feelings - There's a wonderful place just outside of Palm Springs, California where they're all rescues of one sort or another and there are no cages per se - it's lovely and giving many animals a new lease on life and they run/roam freely with in huge areas and medical assistance is never too far away. This is a beautiful shot - I see hope - where children will relate to the animals and not see them as some trophy. Beautiful Taffy.
