I Can Watch Safely From Here by taffy

I Can Watch Safely From Here

We are on Beaver Island (a 15 X 3 mile island in Lake Michigan, about 33 miles from the mainland). It will take several days to get organized, but that's always the case. We spotted this doe on the way home from getting dinner in town -- she stood totally still, hiding in the trees and watching us intently. She seemed quite confident we had no idea she was there. I wonder why she thinks we stopped the car?
Well spotted, she is probably thinking 'They're back'

Only a Hunter or Photographer would spot it. Lovely shot.

Well spotted! She wanted to welcome you both back but was a bit shy! Sweet capture!

I love this and the fact that everything doesn't have to be clearly visible to be seen. The square format is also a smart thing on this shot. A fav.

. . . and welcome to Beaver Island! I like how you focused on the "screen" so the doe stays out of focus.
June 6th, 2018
Very nice!
June 6th, 2018
Must be great not to have to rush back for work.
June 6th, 2018
Delightful shot, they are always so alert and take some time to assess the situation

She really blends in. Wonder what she's telling her friends about the humans that stopped the car.
June 7th, 2018
I would think the slightest movement towards her and she would be off! Nice to see a subject that you really have to look to see!

Welcome to Michigan!

@edorreandresen It's great that deer live and thrive on such a small island... how did they become established there do you know?
June 7th, 2018
I love the way you have photographed this, keeping the foreground in focus yet we can see it is obviously a deer, whose wariness is so well captured.

@vignouse On the island, the only animals are ones that do NOT hibernate. In times long past, they apparently crossed over during the winter when Lake Michigan was frozen. With climate change, it is rare to see the Great Lakes freeze over, but in the past (even in my childhood), it wasn’t that unusual to have a winter freeze like that. It made headlines 3 or 4 years ago when the lake was 90% covered in ice which suggests the rarity of the event today. The good news is we have no bears on the island (and no poisonous snakes).

absolutely love this one.

Beautiful nature shot...Fav

This is what I often see in my backyard- even when they're not standing behind anything they still seem to think I can't see them! Good catch.
