We are on Beaver Island (a 15 X 3 mile island in Lake Michigan, about 33 miles from the mainland). It will take several days to get organized, but that's always the case. We spotted this doe on the way home from getting dinner in town -- she stood totally still, hiding in the trees and watching us intently. She seemed quite confident we had no idea she was there. I wonder why she thinks we stopped the car?
@vignouse On the island, the only animals are ones that do NOT hibernate. In times long past, they apparently crossed over during the winter when Lake Michigan was frozen. With climate change, it is rare to see the Great Lakes freeze over, but in the past (even in my childhood), it wasn’t that unusual to have a winter freeze like that. It made headlines 3 or 4 years ago when the lake was 90% covered in ice which suggests the rarity of the event today. The good news is we have no bears on the island (and no poisonous snakes).
