Junko's -@jyokota - husband, Bill, started the tradition a decade or more ago of making Jim's favorite cake for his birthday. It also happens to be the cake he made for Junko each October on her birthday - https://365project.org/jyokota/365/2016-10-10 - so today was a poignant one for all of us. While I have Bill's recipe, it is only a list of ingredients. The one time I'd made this in the past, Bill was there by text supporting me each step of the way. But, I decided it was important to keep up the tradition, so for Jim's birthday, I baked the cake layers last night and made the frosting after golf today, then assembled it all for dessert tonight. The result was okay - not as good as Bill's but a tribute to him today, as well as celebrating Jim's birthday.
I remember you all celebrating with Bill’s carrot cake! Such a lovely tradition that I am so pleased you are able to carry on Taffy! A lovely way to have Bill with you on Jim’s birthday! Thinking of you all and sending big hugs! Happy birthday Jim! I love your collage and now want a slice of your yummy cake! Fav!
@jyokota I just checked out your link there too - looks absolutely amazing! Well done, Taffy. I wish this was smell-o-vision and that I could reach my finger in through the screen and swipe a bit of cake and frosting to try!
Poignant and a lovely tribute to keep the tradition going. Well done, must have been bitter sweet to cut into that cake. A great collage of the cake making process.
@joansmor Heehee! Yes, I love to bake -- cookies, cakes, bread. BUT, I can't do anything these days as all I would do is eat them...so baking is much more rare for me. The occasional Tollhouse Pie, chocolate chip cookies, brownies [note the chocolate theme] and now I'll make carrot cake for Jim and, when wanted, @jyokota Junko. I still make cinnamon raisin walnut bread every week, though.
Oh my does that look good. Maybe you can make one in Florence. Mostly though the sweet love that comes through in the collage and story that extends to Jim, to Bill, to Junko, to friendships, to remembering, to what is important brings tears to my eyes
the heck, there's cake and i missed it? how'd that happen??? :-) you will find that over time, you will improve on the cake with your personal touch and even get it the taste like the original. as jane said, it is the love, the intrinsic value, that matters and it is a great tribute to your friend. belated happy birthday to your best man. aces, miss taffy. aces!
We bring the memory of departed friends closer when we honor them in this way. In time you'll develop something very special that will have your touch, but you'll always remember Bill. A belated Happy Birthday to your dear husband...I know you made it a special day for him. My love to you all...
