The half-and-half theme is interesting as typically one of the most common ways to compose is using the rule of thirds. In this image, I was struck that the left hand side follows the 50-50 rule and as my eye moved to the right, two-thirds takes over. Lesson learned is that I should think outside the rule of thirds, at least sometimes.
Rules or no rules, this is a perfect photograph. The depth on the left, between the taller buildings, the clouds on the right, one can’t compose it better then this.
I think it's harder to stick to the half and half composition when using the rectangular landscape shot. I try to imagine what my picture will look like when it's in a square to compose mine. What I love about this picture is the building peeking through the clouds- that is a TALL building! Or the clouds are quite low. Either way this is an excellent shot- so dramatic!
OMG what a stunning image Taffy! Just love the Hancock Building peeping out from the clouds! Rules? Sometimes those rules are made to be broken! Lol!
Another image heading for the TT if I’m not mistaken!
you certainly wouldn't want to chop the top off those big clouds tot he right, so you have the composition just as it should be. I don't think I would want to compromise a photo just to fit one rule or another. This is wonderful.
@angelar Thanks, Angela. It can be surreal in a whiteout where everything disappears, but mostly it's just interesting to see the different patterns over time as the clouds move across the sky.
Love this! I found my eye being drawn from the bottom left hand corner up to the right hand corner. My dream shot is to be up the Hancock or Sears Tower when all you can see is the tips of the tallest building sitting just about low cloud cover.
