Phase 1. The Bulb by taffy

Phase 1. The Bulb

I've never tried to grow an amaryllis before, but now we have two of them, both gifts from visiting friends. This one is beginning as a bulb, while the other one began with a few stalks already coming up. We now know what to expect, and are waiting hopefully for this one to show some signs of life. It should have done something by now In the meantime, it's a very cooperative portrait poser!

nicely composed and a lovely edit. i have tried and failed with the lovely amaryllis - look forward to seeing yours flourish :)

I have one with shoots at the moment! Such exciting plants to grow. Maybe I should join you and picture mine tomorrow and keep an eye on progress! I did laugh at it being a good cooperative poser 🤣😂

@casablanca Great idea! I'm worried this one isn't going to grow at all, as the directions said 2 weeks and that was on Dec 11th. But the other one is amazing!

@pistache See my note above...this one is not looking very lively, though the other one is looking brilliant with already 2 huge flowers in bloom.

Give it more time, it doesn`t look mushy every environment is different

A great bulb - sometimes it takes them some time to stir from their sleep !! I had one given as a gift on my birthday (5th December ) and on Christmas day there was a show of the new bud developing - Shall post it one of these days !

"He" might be a slow-bloomer! Give it time (and maybe a little plant food?) and see what happens. Good shot!

Good luck

I’ve never grown one either, but I have always watched the process with interest when friends and colleagues have done this.

What a great photo subject. The dimensionality really pops here -- I don't know Textures 2 is it a new software you have?

@jyokota Same one -- just an update. I'm loving all the FLW images!!
December 27th, 2019
@taffy -- It's my attempt to stay committed to photography when I haven't picked up my camera since you last saw me. I found that I had never processed all the FLW photos from my summer with all my guests. I still have that membership so we need to go to more places!

@jyokota I'm all for it! And your pictures are great -- good to keep going with photography for the fun and the challenge.

Nice photo. I l like the perpendicular striations of the bulb and the pot. Amaryllises are fun. I hope you enjoy watching them grow.

Looking forward to seeing the progress!

Good luck! :-)

They are rewarding plants to grow - so dramatic... the first year you've had one, and the first year we haven't!

This will be an interesting project Taffy. I had to Google "Amaryllis' and then found them to be very similar to things we call "Hippeastrum" - Googled them - they are the same! It's fascinating how names change in different parts of the world. It will be exciting to see what colour you have here. :)

Have fun nurturing this one!
December 28th, 2019
This will be so beautiful in a few weeks time as they grow so quickly! The huge flowers will be a knockout!
